(AP) ? Syria has blamed rebels for blowing up a natural gas pipeline Monday in the country's oil-rich east, disrupting distribution.

A statement carried by Syria's state news agency blamed a "terrorist group," the regime's description of rebels seeking to topple President Bashar Assad.

The news agency said the blast Monday some 30 kilometers (18 miles) north of Deir el-Zour caused the loss of around 1.5 million cubic meters of gas. It quoted an Oil Ministry official as saying the station fed electricity plants and a fertilizer factory and that engineers were repairing the leak.

Rebels have repeatedly targeted Syria's oil infrastructure in an effort to sap government finances. Last week, they reported seizing the al-Tanak oil field, also in eastern Syria.

In Damascus, Syrian Prime Minister Wael al-Halqi acknowledged the difficulties to the Cabinet on Monday, blaming them on "unfair" international sanctions on Syria and rebel attacks on infrastructure.

"The armed terrorist groups targeted the productive and service institutions and caused huge damage to the national economy and the daily life of the citizens," he said.

Al-Halqi said the government was trying to reopen oil facilities to provide for Syrian's needs.

Anti-regime activists say more than 45,000 people have been killed since the uprising against Assad began in March 2011. Since then, it has evolved into a full-scale civil war with scores of armed groups across the country fighting regime forces.

The war has badly damaged Syria's economy, weakened its currency and led to shortages and price spikes for many basic goods.

Although Russia and China have vetoed efforts to sanction Syria in the U.N. Security Council, the U.S. and European Union have imposed multiple rounds of sanctions on Syria.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an anti-regime activist group, said rebels were clashing with government forces near a number of military bases in the country's north as well as in the central city of Homs and in suburbs southeast of the capital, Damascus.

The group also said 11 rebel fighters were killed in the Damascus suburb of Moadamiyeh, and eight people, including four children and one woman, were killed in government shelling on the al-Marjah area of Aleppo.

Rebels have made gains in recent months, though few expect the war to end soon.

An international plan to end the civil war with a cease-fire and the formation of a transitional government has gone nowhere, mostly because both sides still seek a military victory.

Clinton's blood clot an uncommon complication

The kind of blood clot in the skull that doctors say Hillary Rodham Clinton has is relatively uncommon but can occur after an injury like the fall and concussion the secretary of state was diagnosed with earlier this month.

Doctors said Monday that an MRI scan revealed a clot in a vein in the space between the brain and the skull behind Clinton's right ear.

The clot did not lead to a stroke or neurological damage and is being treated with blood thinners, and she will be released once the proper dose is worked out, her doctors said in a statement.

Clinton has been at New York-Presbyterian Hospital since Sunday, when the clot was diagnosed during what the doctors called a routine follow-up exam. At the time, her spokesman would not say where the clot was located, leading to speculation it was another leg clot like the one she suffered behind her right knee in 1998.

Clinton had been diagnosed with a concussion Dec. 13 after a fall in her home that was blamed on a stomach virus that left her weak and dehydrated.

The type of clot she developed, a sinus venous thrombosis, "certainly isn't the most common thing to happen after a concussion" and is one of the few types of blood clots in the skull or head that are treated with blood thinners, said neurologist Dr. Larry Goldstein. He is director of Duke University's stroke center and has no role in Clinton's care or personal knowledge of it.

The area where Clinton's clot developed is "a drainage channel, the equivalent of a big vein inside the skull ? it's how the blood gets back to the heart," Goldstein explained.

It should have no long-term consequences if her doctors are saying she has suffered no neurological damage from it, he said.

Dr. Joseph Broderick, chairman of neurology at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, also called Clinton's problem "relatively uncommon" after a concussion.

He and Goldstein said the problem often is overdiagnosed. They said scans often show these large "draining pipes" on either side of the head are different sizes, which can mean blood has pooled or can be merely an anatomical difference.

"I'm sure she's got the best doctors in the world looking at her," and if they are saying she has no neurological damage, "I would think it would be a pretty optimistic long-term outcome," Broderick said.

A review article in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2005 describes the condition, which more often occurs in newborns or young people but can occur after a head injury. With modern treatment, more than 80 percent have a good neurologic outcome, the report says.

In the statement, Clinton's doctors said she "is making excellent progress and we are confident she will make a full recovery. She is in good spirits, engaging with her doctors, her family, and her staff."

'Dairy cliff' may be avoided, for a year at least

5 hrs.

Farm-state lawmakers have agreed to a one-year extension of the expiring U.S. farm bill that, if enacted, would head off a possible doubling of retail milk prices to $7.00 or more a gallon in 2013.?

The compromise measure resulted from bipartisan discussions in the House of Representatives' Agriculture Committee and talks with colleagues in the U.S. Senate, Frank Lucas of Oklahoma, the House panel's chairman, said in a statement Sunday.?

"It is not perfect - no compromise ever is - but it is my sincere hope that it will pass the House and Senate and be signed by the President by January 1," Lucas, a Republican, said.?

It was not immediately clear whether House and Senate leaders would bring the measure to a vote soon enough to avoid putting the so-called "dairy cliff" milk price spike into action.?

Separately, lawmakers are working on a last-ditch effort to avert the similarly timed "fiscal cliff," when the biggest tax increases ever to hit Americans are set to start, paired with significant federal spending cuts?

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, in an interview with CNN taped Friday and aired on Sunday, urged Congress to come up with such a solution, if only an extension of the old law that expired nearly three months ago, lest milk prices start rising after Jan. 1, 2013.?

Absent a new bill or an extension of current law, milk prices would revert to rules set in 1949, the last "permanent" farm legislation in the United States. Government price supports would kick in, based on production costs 64 years ago, plus inflation. The potential retail milk price has been estimated at $6.00 to $8.00 a gallon versus current levels near $3.50.?

Lucas said in the statement that time had run out in Congress' current session to enact a new five-year farm bill, as farm-state lawmakers and the dairy lobby had hoped.?

Vilsack told CNN that soaring milk prices - if it comes to that - would ripple throughout all commodities "if this thing goes on for an extended period of time."?

The price of milk will not double on Jan. 1, if Congress fails to act. Instead, prices would rise gradually as supplies are removed from normal markets and land instead in U.S. Department of Agriculture storage facilities.?

With supplies more scarce in normal marketing channels, some milk distributors and dairy product manufacturers could have turned to imported supplies.?

The Department of Agriculture is reviewing a range of options for administering programs should a permanent law become legally effective on Jan. 1, a spokesman said on Friday.?

The Senate passed its new five-year farm bill in June, and the House Agriculture Committee followed with a version in July.?

But the House bill, with large cuts in food-stamp funding for lower-income Americans, has never been brought to a vote by the full House. The Senate and House have for months remained far apart on the issues of food stamps and crop subsidies.?

Lucas said the year-long extension "provides certainty to our producers and critical disaster assistance to those affected by record drought conditions."?

It would also mean another round of the direct subsidies to farmers that cost about $5 billion a year, and that both sides of debate had agreed earlier to eliminate.?

India Demands Change as It Mourns Gang Rape Victim

Indian police charged six men with murder Saturday, hours after a New Delhi paramedical student who was gang raped and beaten on a New Delhi bus two weeks ago succumbed to her injuries at Mount Elizabeth hospital in Singapore. The hospital?s chief executive, Kelvin Loh, said that the girl was ?courageous in fighting for her life for so long against the odds, but the trauma to her body was too severe for her to overcome.?

The brutal rape had flamed violent protests across New Delhi, where people ? especially youths ? turned out in droves to demand justice for the girl, whose identity is being kept under wraps by authorities. The news of her death on Saturday lurched an already exasperated country into angry but peaceful mourning. The government shut down central New Delhi, closing down major subway stations and banning gatherings of more than five people in the city center. However, that did not deter protesters from gathering at the central area of Jantar Mantar to mourn the girl?s death. Some shouted anti-rape slogans, while others favored a silent protest with black bands over their mouths. What united the protesters was the palpable anti-government sentiment.

(PHOTOS: In India, a Rape Sparks Violent Protests and Demands for Justice)

After news of her death spread, the government, which had clamped down on protests last week and is often accused of being tin-eared, rushed to calm frayed nerves. ?We have already seen the emotions and energies this incident has generated,? said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in a statement. ?These are perfectly understandable reactions from a young India and an India that genuinely desires change. It would be a true homage to her memory if we are able to channel these emotions and energies into a constructive course of action.?

The rape has also sparked a national debate in India on violence against women. Before her condition worsened in a New Delhi hospital last week, the girl told her mother that she didn?t want to die. But martyrdom, thrust upon her, has made her an unwitting symbol of India?s fight against sexual violence. Her death is a stark reminder of the hundreds of women who are awaiting justice in India, where one rape is reported every 20 minutes.

Sonia Gandhi, the head of the ruling Congress Party, and India?s most powerful politician, also addressed the nation in a rare television appearance: ?I appeal you to remain calm and help strengthen our collective resolve to fight the menace of violence against women,? she said. ?Today all Indians feel as they have lost their own beloved daughter, their cherished sister, a young woman of 23 whose life full of hope, dream and promise was ahead of her.? The tragedy, Gandhi added, deepened the government?s ?determination to battle the pervasive shameful social attitudes and mindsets that allow men to rape and molest women and girls with such impunity.? Meanwhile, Delhi?s chief minister, Sheila Dikshit, who called the incident shameful for her as an administrator and a common citizen, had joined around 500 protesters at Jantar Mantar. However, she was forced to leave as angry protesters swirled around her. ?Our hearts are burdened with grief and shame,? Dikshit had said earlier. ?Not the moment for words or speeches but for deep reflection.?

(MORE: Brutal New Delhi Gang Rape Outrages Indians, Spurs Calls for Action)

Arun Jaitley, of the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party, said it was time to introspect on how to improve existing laws and judicial processes and, most importantly, the ?consciousness of the citizenry which creates a better environment where women can live with dignity.? Indian President Pranab Mukherjee called the victim a ?true hero? and a ?brave daughter of India? and urged everyone to resolve ?this death will not be in vain.? Human rights defenders, too, reacted to the Delhi tragedy. Human Rights Watch said the death of the victim was a ?sobering reminder of the vast tragedy of sexual violence in India.?

On Saturday, a few hundred students from Jawaharlal Nehru University marched silently to the bus stop where the rape victim and her friend had boarded the bus on Dec. 16. They carried placards reading ?She is not with us but her story must awaken us.? The New Delhi tragedy certainly united Indians in their pursuit of justice for the victim. While murder charges and subsequent convictions would no doubt appease popular sentiment in the short run, the girl?s death seems likely to haunt India?s policy makers for years to come. That may be the only takeaway in the tragic death of an unknown girl in the world?s largest democracy. ?Her greatest betrayal,? filmmaker Shekhar Kapur wrote on Twitter, ?is that we will forget. Political system?s greatest hope is we will forget. Our only redemption is if we do not forget.?

Israel charges Avigdor Lieberman with breach of trust and fraud, but other suspicions against ex-foreign minister remain

Israel?s Justice Ministry filed its indictment against former Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman in a Jerusalem court on Sunday, charging him with breach of trust and fraud in a case that could further harm his political career.

Lieberman is accused of trying to advance the career of a former diplomat after the envoy relayed information to him about a criminal investigation into the former Cabinet minister?s business dealings.

On Dec. 13, the Justice Ministry released a draft indictment to both Lieberman and the press. On Sunday, an amended version of that draft was filed in the Jerusalem Magistrates Court after prosecutors received testimony suggesting he was more deeply involved than previously thought in trying to promote the diplomat.

The actual charges remained unchanged.

Lieberman, who denies any wrongdoing, resigned his Cabinet post earlier this month after he was informed of the pending charges, though he remains a member of parliament. He did not appear in court on Sunday and had no comment on the indictment.

The diplomat he tried to promote, former ambassador to Belarus Zeev Ben-Aryeh, reached a plea bargain with the state in the case earlier this year.

The indictment did not address the main suspicions against Lieberman that were the focus of a years-long investigation. Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein ultimately decided that prosecutors did not have a strong enough case to charge Lieberman with illicitly receiving millions of dollars from businessmen and laundering the cash through straw companies in eastern Europe.

While he was charged with lesser offenses, Lieberman?s political future could be compromised if the court that hears the case decides to convict him of a crime that carries what is known in Israeli law as ?moral turpitude.? Lawmakers convicted of such crimes must resign immediately from parliament, then are barred from re-entering politics for seven years.

Lieberman?s Yisrael Beiteinu party is running on a joint list with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu?s Likud in the Jan. 22 election, and he is expected to be re-elected to parliament. Political commentators had viewed the hookup as grooming him to become a future prime minister. Lieberman takes a hard line on concessions to the Palestinians and perceives Israel?s large Arab minority as a threat to the Jewish state.

In other political news, Israel?s Supreme Court unanimously rejected an election committee?s attempt to disqualify an Arab lawmaker from running for parliament again next month because she took part in a flotilla that tried to breach Israel?s naval blockade of the Hamas-run Gaza Strip.

I hope this ruling will put an end to the political witchhunt

The lawmaker, Hanin Zoabi, enraged many Israelis in 2010 by joining the Turkish-led Mavi Marmara flotilla, which was stormed by Israeli naval commandos who clashed with pro-Palestinian activists, killing nine. The Israeli military says the soldiers acted in self-defense after being attacked on the deck.

Zoabi was nearly assaulted in parliament by another lawmaker and subsequently was stripped of some of her parliamentary privileges.

Earlier this month, an Israeli elections committee voted to disqualify her from running in next month?s election. She appealed that decision to the Supreme Court, which overturned it, as it has rejected the committee?s attempts in previous years to bar other Arab candidates from running.

?I welcome the ruling,? Zoabi said. ?I hope this ruling will put an end to the political witchhunt.?

Lawmaker Danny Danon, who collected thousands of signatures demanding that Zoabi?s candidacy be disqualified, accused the court of ?backing the Marmara terrorist rather than naval commando fighters.?

The court said in its ruling that it would release its reason for overturning the decision at a later date. Under Israel?s election law, the court had to issue its ruling by Sunday.

Bad news is loud, but good news rules.

If you look behind the often dire headlines and examine the long-term trends, you'll see that crime is falling, lifespans are increasing, and poverty is ebbing. In other words, there's solid evidence for hope.

There's much more good news than bad news. But bad news travels fast and commands attention. Good news is like water carving a valley or a tree gradually extending its branches. Good news is a child learning a little more each day or a business quietly prospering. We hardly notice it.

Examine the data over time, and you'l find irrefutable evidence of progress: the decline of war and violent crime, the increase in life spans; the spread of literacy, democracy, and equal rights; the waning of privilege based on race, gender, heredity, beliefs (Jina Moore and a team of Monitor writers say this much more specifically in our cover story: "Progress Watch 2012").

Every so often there are vivid scenes of good news -- Neil Armstrong bouncing onto the moon, revelers atop the Berlin Wall, Nelson Mandela walking out of Robben Island prison. But most of the time good news is incremental, which causes it to be taken for granted.

Not bad news. When we hear it, we sit up and ask, "What just happened?" Bad news can make us beat our fists on the table and ask where was God and how can such a terrible thing happen. Bad news is mesmerizing. We can't look away from a collapsing high-rise or an inundated coastal town. We know the meaning of a sidewalk filled with flowers and teddy bears.

Bad news is insistent. In fairness, bad news isn't all bad. It can alert us to problems that need to be addressed. But in the grand scheme of things, there's actually not that much of it . Oh, there's always enough for a front page or a?Web bulletin or a nightly newscast, although sometimes reporters have to travel to the ends of the earth to find it. Bad news has a natural advantage, however. It pulses through humanity's central nervous system -- word of mouth, the media, the Internet. Its images are riveting and its stories are dramatic. It floods the zone.

And when there's a shortage of bad news in the present, we can always turn to the future. Welcome to worry, dread, and pessimism. Sure, things seem OK now, but just over the horizon a disaster is brewing. Don't be a sap. Bad things are on the way.

They probably are. And they'll shock us and again make us wonder if life is out of control. But in this last issue of our news magazine for 202, we're looking in the rearview mirror to see how things are going, and we're finding plenty of reason for hope.

Hope helps. It keeps us going in bleak times and amid disheartening news. But hope has much more credibility when we can point to the reason for it. Asserting that we should all cheer up is sweet. Knowing why is powerful.

Here are some reasons for hope: Extreme poverty is declining. HIV is no longer a death sentence. Technology is transforming everything from African agriculture to urban transportation. Drug violence is decreasing in Mexico. Travel is safer almost everywhere. Crime rates are falling. Somalia is emerging from a long night of anarchy. Myanmar (Burma) is coming out of its dictatorial shell. And while it's true that China and Russia are only semi-free and the Egypt and other post-dictator nations may be going down ill-considered paths, water is still carving the valley. Freedom lives in 7 billion hearts.

Bad news will make headlines in 2013. But good news will quietly rule.

New Years Resolutions for your Relationship. | The Marriage and ...

New Years is a great time to look back over the previous year and make an inventory. Make an inventory of all the things you've done right so you know to keep doing them. And make an inventory of things you've done not-so-right that you'd like to improve on. This is one of the greatest things about New Years: the opportunity to let bygones be bygones and to start anew on things you wish you could.

One thing, though, that people don't often think about when they're making New Years resolutions is things they'd like to fix in their relationship with their significant other. Every relationship has its' ups and downs. This doesn't mean that it's a bad relationship. But it does mean there's room for improvement. Even if your relationship isn't under a lot of stress or if you feel your relationship is doing just fine, here are a few relationship resolutions for you to consider that will help improve your relationship. After all, what harm could a little improvement do in your relationship?

New Years Resolutions for Your Relationship

1) A little less talk and a lot more action. Every couple talks to each other about things they'd like to do more. They'd like to get tickets to the music hall or go to their favorite lake more. Forget about talking about them. Pick one or two of the easiest or most important things and actually do them. Make it a priority this year.

2) Spend more time together.?When you look back on your life, you probably won't say that you wished you spent more time at work. You'll probably say that you wished you spent more time with your loved ones. Don't risk looking back with that regret. Start this year off right and make a resolution to spend more time together.?

3) Make more memories. In a previous post about holiday gifts your lover will love I wrote about how I am a fan of giving memories for gifts instead of giving things you can buy from a store. This year, make a resolution to make more memories together. Take that vacation you always wanted or do that project on the house together. Whatever you do, make sure it makes memories.?
4) Fight less. This is one most couples want to do anyway. Every couple has one thing that they perpetually argue about: in-laws, children, money, etc. You've argued about ever since you two were together and you haven't fixed it yet. It's likely that you won't resolve it anytime soon, either. Instead of arguing about it over and over again talk with your spouse about how you can both handle the conversation next time it comes up. This will help you to fight less about it and begin the year talking about the difficulty in a positive way.

Remember, New Years resolutions are meant to point you in new directions and create new possibilities. The same can happen with your relationship. Make a resolution to focus on your relationship more this year and who knows what direction you'll be pointed in next year.?

NBA scores: Rockets loss to Spurs hurts as top teams in West win

Houston lost a game on the Western Conference leaders after losing to San Antonio on Friday night.

The Houston Rockets failed to keep pace in the Western Conference on Friday after losing to the San Antonio Spurs, 122-116.

Normally, if James Harden and Jeremy Lin combine for 54 points and 15 assists the Rockets should expect a win. But those numbers from Houston's back court weren't enough to overcome an offensive outburst from the Spurs. Point guard Tony Parker paced San Antonio with 31 points and 10 assists while Tim Duncan added 30 points of his own.

The loss dropped the Rockets six games behind the Spurs in the Southwest Division standings and 7.5 games behind the Los Angeles Clippers at the top of the conference standings.

In other key games, the Oklahoma City Thunder survived overtime against the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday to rally for a 111-105 win as Kevin Durant dropped 40 points.

Meanwhile, the Clippers took control of the conference lead with a strong 106-77 blowout of the Boston Celtics on Thursday, followed by a hard-fought road win over the Utah Jazz on Friday. The Clips won their 16th-consecutive game by scoring 68 second-half points to beat the Jazz, 116-114.

Other Western Conference contenders in action on Friday included the Denver Nuggets and Golden State Warriors. Golden State earned a 96-89 win over the Philadelphia 76ers as David Lee scored 25 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Denver ran past Dallas, 106-85, thanks to 39 points from Danilo Gallinari and 19 rebounds from Kenneth Faried.

In another big East-West match-up, James Johnson made a late three-pointer to lift the Sacramento Kings to an upset win over the New York Knicks 106-105.

Here's a look at the full NBA scoreboard.

The five-day losing streak for the Dow Jones industrial average was the longest since July.

The Dow dropped 158.20 points, or 1.2 percent, to 12,938.11 points, with losses accelerating in the last 20 minutes of trading as reports circulated that President Barack Obama would not be making a new budget proposal in a meeting with congressional leaders.

The Standard & Poor 500 index fell 15.67 points, or 1.1 percent, to 1,402.43, its longest losing streak in three months, and the Nasdaq dropped 25.59 points, or 0.9 percent, to 2,960.31.

"The reality, late in the day, is that a deal is just not going to get done," said Ryan Detrick, a senior technical strategist at Schaeffer Investment Research. "We could be greeted by a big sell-off at the start of January."

President Barack Obama returned from a Christmas break in Hawaii to meet with congressional leaders at the White House to try thrash out the terms of a deal that would prevent across-the-board tax increases for millions of Americans as well as simultaneous government spending cuts beginning Jan. 1. Those measures, if implemented, could push the economy back into recession, economists say.

Stocks?closed lower Thursday but erased most of an early loss after Republicans said they would reconvene the House of Representatives Sunday in hopes of piecing together a last-minute budget deal.

Traders have been focusing on Washington, and the budget negotiations, since the Nov. 6 presidential election returned a divided government to power.

"I can't wait till this is done, so we can start talking about markets again and not just about politics," said Doug Cote, chief market strategist at ING Investment Management. Cote doesn't expect lawmakers will manage to reach a deal before the deadline and says that when people assess the extent of tax increases on the way, "the market is going reel."

Cote also expects slowing earnings growth to hit?stocks.

Despite the fiscal gridlock in Washington, major?stock?indexes are holding on to gains for the year. The Dow is up 5.9 percent, the S&P 500 index is 11.5 percent higher and the Nasdaq is up 13.6 percent.

Stocks?rose in 2012 on optimism that a housing market recovery, coupled with an improving job market, will support economic growth. The Federal Reserve has also extended its bond purchasing program, which is intended to lower borrowing costs and encourage spending and investment.

Stocks?declined despite reports that suggested the outlook for the economy is improving.

A measure of Americans who signed contracts to buy homes increased last month to its highest level in two and a half years, the latest sign of improvement in the once-battered housing market. The National Association of Realtors said Friday that its seasonally adjusted pending home sales index rose to its highest since April 2010.

The Institute of Supply Management's Chicago-area purchasing managers index for December came in at 51.6, beating estimates for a gain to 51.

Bond prices rose as investors moved money into defensive investments. The yield on the benchmark rise 10-year Treasury note, which falls when bond prices rise, dropped to 1.70 percent from 1.75 percent late Thursday.

Among?stocks?making moves:

Hewlett-Packard fell 36 cents, or 2.6 percent, to $13.68 after the computer and printer maker said the Department of Justice is investigating H-P's business software unit Autonomy. H-P bought Autonomy for $10 billion in 2011 and has accused the company's former management of fudging its accounting before the acquisition. H-P has lost almost half its market value this year, making it the biggest decliner among the 30stocks?in the Dow average.

Barnes and Noble rose 62 cents, or 4.3 percent, to $14.97 after the U.K. publishing and education company Pearson said it is making an $89.5 million investment in the company's Nook Media division, as the two companies look to make a bigger digital push into the education sector.

Of course people travel by foot and by living and breathing animals. But, when it comes to longer trips, they have two different forms of transportation.

The main form being horse drawn carriage. Though, the horses aren't exactly the 'living' kind.

The horses they use to pull horse drawn carriages are made completely out of metals and are steam powered. Smoke and whatnot puffs out of their nostrils and they can travel far longer than a living horse can, not needing to sleep or truly eat like a real animal. Though, they do tend to move slower in the rain and cold weather.

Image

As for carriages, there are three different basic kinds.

The kind that only seats one to two passengers and has an open frame and is typically made of wood or very cheap metal, which causes them to be easily breakable:
(This type being the least expensive and the most often seen around.)

Image

The second kind is more expensive and is usually ridden in by doctors and priests and people of jobs along those lines. It is a semi-closed carriage, one that is made with somewhat materials than the cheapest one; usually metal and wood:

Image

The third type is the most expensive and generally ridden in by rulers and their servants when they travel together. This one is usually made of metal and wood, though the materials are far better on this one than in the other two types. Note that it completely closed off, somewhat like what a car of today is:

Image

Beyond the horse drawn carriages though, all walks of life take trains to further away trips. Though, the trains are separated by class and ranking amungst the people. The poorer folk sitting near the end of the train, while the more important sit in cars closer to the front:

Sydney Thunder v Brisbane Heat ? Big Bash League, 2012/13 ? Live Cricket Score and Match Update ? Heat down Thunder by 5 wickets

Daniel Christian claimed an emphatic five-for to propel Brisbane Heat to a 5-wicket victory over Sydney Thunder, in their match during the ongoing Big Bash League tournament, today on December 28 at the Stadium Australia in Sydney.

Sydney Thunder stepped up to bat first after winning the toss, but lost skipper Chris Rogers (6) to Ben Cutting early, in the 5th over. Chris Gayle (28) and Matt Prior (17) offered the team a brief moment of respite, by setting up Thunder?s highest partnership of the match ? a 35-run stand for the second wicket. However, Player of the Match Daniel Christian (4-0-26-5) commenced his rampage by sending both batsmen packing in the 10th over, leaving the hosts at 59 for 3.

In total, only five batsmen were able to register double-digit scores, while the remainder failed to offer any resistance. Usman Khawaja managed a 23-run contribution, while Sean Abbott scored 11 and Scott Coyte chipped in with 12 runs. Meanwhile, Simon Keen (9), wicketkeeper Ryan Carters (5), Chris Tremain (1), and Adam Zampa (6) all failed to put up much of a fight. By the end of 20 overs, with Dirk Nannes (0*) the lone batsman remaining at the crease, Thunder found themselves all out at an average final total of 126.

Heat, on the other hand, barely stumbled during their chase, which they easily managed to complete within 17 overs, at the expense of 5 wickets, despite the efforts of Dirk Nannes (4-1-31-2), Chris Tremain (4-0-27-2), and Adam Zampa (4-0-34-1).

Top-order batsmen skipper James Hopes (8) and Joe Burns (0) were both snapped up by Nannes in the 4th over, while Luke Pomersbach (28) and Daniel Christian (12) both managed mediocre contributions before they were sent packing by Tremain ? Christian caught out by wicketkeeper Ryan Carters in the 7th over, and Pomersbach bowled in the 9th.

By this point, the team was at 57 for 4, but from there onwards, Chris Lynn took on most of the responsibility for the chase. Lynn smashed an unbeaten 51 off 38, and assisted by Thisara Perera (7) and Peter Forrest (12*), got the team up to 127 with ease, with 5 wickets still in hand, and 20 balls remaining.

6 Filmmaking Tips From Kathryn Bigelow - Film Directing Tips

by Scott Beggs.

Hanging with bikers, vampires and surfing bank robbers, Kathryn Bigelow?has made a name for herself chasing after adrenaline. After mixed reviews and a bad box office break for her Soviet submarine flick?K-19: The Widowmaker, Bigelow developed one of writer Mark Boal?s articles into a television series for Fox called? The Inside, then chose to work with him to turn his experiences embedded in Baghdad-patrolling bomb squad into? The Hurt Locker.

The film ? which she never took to studios, opting instead for independent financing and freedom ? was a marvel, earning a massive amount of critical love and earning both the Oscar for Best Picture and Best Director for Bigelow.

She?s a fierce talent who has weathered a decades-long career to emerge as an important modern storyteller who takes on difficult, true-life events and spins them into profound works.

So here?s a bit of free film school (for fans and filmmakers alike) from a woman who likes to blow things up for a living.

Wild Dolphins Give Gifts To Researchers Studying Them In Tangalooma, Australia

'Tis the season for giving, but in Australia, wild dolphins have been documented offering gifts to the researchers studying them for quite some time.

We hope those "gifts" came with a receipt, though, as the offerings seem likely to trigger the gag reflex in some humans. So far, the presents include eels, tuna, squid, at least one octopus and a variety of other fin fish. Discovery News reports the gifts are highly valued food sources for dolphins.

The first gift, from an adult male dolphin named Fred, was a dead moray eel, offered in July 1998, the Daily Mail notes.

According to a recently released report in the journal Anthrozoos: A Multidisciplinary Journal of the Interactions of People & Animals, a group of wild bottlenose dolphins near the resort of Tangalooma, in Australia, have offered gifts to the biologists studying them at least 22 more times since the first incident with Fred. The paper notes that "[gift] giving has become an established but infrequent part of the culture" of that particular group of dolphins.

While food-sharing is not all that uncommon among animals of the same species, inter-species sharing (aside from the dead birds your cat tracks into the house) is a rare occurrence, Discovery News notes.

As of yet, researchers in Australia aren't 100 percent sure what triggered the dolphins' generosity, but according to EarthSky, they believe it may be some form of play behavior. Other explanations include a desire on the dolphins' part to give back, as the researchers have been feeding them for quite some time. The dolphins may also see the researchers as incompetent hunters that require an occasional handout.

RolePlayGateway?

The Final Epilogue is a fanfic roleplay of the game The Last Story. It takes place generations after the game's ending, when the original members of the mercenary group have been long passed away. A new ruler has stepped up to take the throne, and everything went haywire.

The new ruler cared only for himself. Unlike other tyrants, this one happens to simply not care for his people. Instead, the ruler made decisions only to benefit himelf in petty ways (like the levee, building up his castle, having feasts and parties every meal of everyday). And there are even more threats to society now.

The citizens of Lazulis City lived peacefully with the Gurak population, until now. Now that there is a weak ruler in the Argannan throne, Segregation Groups have risen up to kill off or at least dominate the other race. What's more is that the Reptids have dug their ways out of the underground, and now are pillaging the citizens of Lazulis City, Outskirts.

However, there is hope. A new generation of the Zael Mercenaries have risen up to help the people, and relinquish the power of the ruler. They will do quests, fend of reptids, crush the Segregation Groups, and give the throne to the rumored lost child of Argannan.

Roles:

Mercenary
The Mecenaries are the protagonists of this roleplay. They try to help as much people as they can in the long run while trying to complete the ultimate goal.

The King
Julian is, to put it simple, a sick bastard who would let his people rot as long as his desires are fullfilled. Julian supports the Human Segregation Group. He is one of the antagonists of this roleplay.

Human Segregation Group
A group of human extremists who want to cause havoc on the Gurak. They want to seperate and isolate the Gurak as much as possible. Some want to kill the whole population so the humans only remain. Either way, they want to do harm to the Gurak population. Their leader is Lucian.

Leader of the Human Segregation Group
Lucian is as clever and as sneaky as a snake, and he is as deadly as one, too. His words can easily set into your head, and Lucian can easily manipulate you. His swordsmanship is unparalled to anyone still alive. However, you can still compare it to Sir Therius's skill in the sword.

Gurak Segregation Group
The Gurak clone of the Human Segregation Group. They want to overthrow King Julian as well and place their leader, Zane, on the throne.

Leader of the Gurak Segregation Group
Zane is a direct descendant of Zangurak, the former Gurak king who was killed in the war against the humans. Because of his family's history, many humans had actually despised him. Thus, he created the Gurak Segregation Group out of anger.

The Knights
While they are charged with Julian's orders, they try to resist as much as possible without him knowing. They support the mercenaries, and when the band rebels, the knights will fight alongside them. However, there are some who are part of the Segregation Groups, and a handful are fu;ly devoted to King Julian.

Other:
Magic:
Some people are able to use magic. The elements consist of light, darkness, star, nature, fire, and ice. Using the element the smae as the enemy's results in it absorbing the magic and healing itself. Using the opposite element results in more damage, however the same applies to you (you only get an element if you are a mage.).

Using magic also results in the manifestation of magic circles. They usually deal damage to the enemy except for healing circles. Fire circles add fire element to your physical attacks, ice makes ice attacks, etc etc for the other elements. You also have healing spells, which result in healing circles. Stand on them and you will get healed overtime until you are fully regenerated. After a few minutes, the circle will dissipitate on it's own.

There are three more circles. which aren't manifested by magic spells. They manifest only at the user's comman, but only ofr a short time. Damage circles keep weakening opponents, and poison circles poison the opponent. The last circle, Death circle, does not effect the opponent itself. It uses spikes that rise from the ground to attack the opponent. If they survive, they will be given the Death status, meaning that if they don't get into a heal circle, they will die. The Death Circle disappears after attacking. Damage Circles only dissipitate after the user has died.

However, there are certain skills that warriors (non magic users) can use to diffuse those circles. (Unlike the game, I will NOT allow the effects of Diffusion.)
Few mages can also have the spell Reverse, which reverses the effects (heal circles turn into damage circles, ice circles effect the original user and its allies, etc.).

Spirit Attacks:
At the time when you most need it, you would be able to do some kind of strong attack that would have an effect on the enemy. Mages use spells, warriors use slashes or stabs or whatever, and mixed usually make up something unique.
There are also two sacred spells only available to the Argannan family called Ancient Summon and Ancient Barrier. They are both unknown, and you must find out only by casting the spell as an Argannan (marriages do not apply).
Remember: Spirit attacks are extremely rare and it takes a lot of training to even learn them. Even them, I'll allow one spirit attack every ten posts.

Putin signs law banning American adoptions

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed into law a ban on Americans adopting children from Russia. Many Americans, and many Russians, see the ban as a political maneuver that comes at the expense of children. Channel Four's Jane Deith reports.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

President Vladimir Putin signed a law on Friday that bans Americans from adopting Russian children and imposes other measures in retaliation for new U.S. legislation meant to punish Russian human rights abusers.

The law, which has ignited outrage among Russian liberals and children's rights advocates, enters into force on Jan. 1 and is likely to strain U.S.-Russia relations.

As well as banning U.S. adoptions, it will also outlaw some non-governmental organizations that receive U.S. funding and impose a visa ban and asset freeze on Americans accused of violating the rights of Russians abroad.

The law could block dozens of Russian children expected to be adopted by American families from leaving the country and cut off one of the main international routes for Russian children to leave orphanages that are often dismal. Russia is the single biggest source of adopted children in the United States, with more than 60,000 Russian children being taken in by Americans over the past two decades.

The bill is retaliation for an American law that calls for sanctions against Russians deemed to be human rights violators and part of an increasingly confrontational stance by the Kremlin against the West.

Related: Americans may lose right to adopt Russian children

Putin said U.S. authorities routinely let Americans suspected of violence toward Russian adoptees go unpunished ? a clear reference to Dima Yakovlev, a Russian toddler for whom the bill is named. The child was adopted by Americans and then died in 2008 after his father left him in a car in broiling heat for hours. The father was found not guilty of involuntary manslaughter.

Children's rights ombudsman Pavel Astakhov on Wednesday said that 46 children who were about to be adopted in the United States would remain in Russia if the bill came into effect. On Thursday, he petitioned the president to extend the ban to other countries.

John and Renee Thomas with their son, Jack, 7, who was adopted from Russia at the age of 3. Jack is hoping for his brother, Nikoly, now in a Russian orphanage, to join him in the United States.

Would-be adoptive parents in the United States are left hanging by Putin's signing of the bill, which was passed by Russian lawmakers last week.

Among them are John and Renee Thomas of Minnetonka, Minn., Kari Huus of NBC News reported.?The Thomases have already adopted Jack, 7, from Russia. When they found out he had a little brother, they began the process to try to adopt him, too. The wait has stretched to four years, and now the adoption may be in danger.?

"When Jack is asked about his family, he talks about his brother," John Thomas said. "He always asks, 'When is he coming home?' We just tell him we?re waiting for the call."

More: Adoption of little brother caught in US-Russia spat

UNICEF estimates that there are about 740,000 children without parental custody in Russia, while only 18,000 Russians are now waiting to adopt a child.

Russian President Vladamir Putin has said he'll sign a proposed law that would halt adoptions of Russian children to Americans. NBC's Duncan Golestani reports.

The U.S. State Department on Thursday repeated its opposition to the Russian measure.

"The welfare of children is simply too important to tie to the political aspects of our relationship," State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell said. "Additionally, we are deeply troubled by the provisions in the bill that would restrict the ability of Russian civil society organizations to work with American partners." ?

Critics of the bill left dozens of stuffed toys and candles outside the parliament's lower and upper houses to express solidarity with Russian orphans.?

An online petition urging the Kremlin to scrap the bill garnered more than 100,000 Russian signatures.?

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
