Summer Reading For Sharp Entrepreneurs | "No Bull" Chicagoland ...

Joe Sugarman & Steve Sipress

Joe Sugarman & Steve Sipress

Memorial Day weekend has come and gone, and although it?s not yet officially ?Summer,? there?s nothing like a few 90+ degree days to get everyone?s mind turning to thoughts of rest, relaxation and? summer reading.

All wealth-minded entrepreneurs, small business owners and sales professionals know that the money is in the marketing, while the vast majority of business people mistakenly focus instead on improving only the quality of whatever happens to be their deliverable, to the severe detriment of their bank accounts.

So for all of you sharp marketers, here is my list of the most basic small business marketing books that are absolutely essential reading for all entrepreneurs. My copies of all of these are dog-eared, highlighted and underlined, and none are ever more than a few feet from my desk:

Dan Kennedy, ?The Ultimate Marketing Plan? A very basic overview of direct response marketing for beginners who are unfamiliar with and/or have never used it to grow their businesses.

Al Ries and Jack Trout, ?The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing: Violate Them at Your Own Risk!? and ?Positioning: The Battle For Your Mind? Both are quick and easy reads, full of common sense wisdom that, unfortunately, is not very common. Good for the very basic purpose of establishing a marketing mindset (but other, more in-depth study and research is necessary to become an effective marketer).

Robert Collier, ?The Robert Collier Letter Book? Pure genius from one of the all-time greatest copywriters. In addition to the many examples of the very best ?salesmanship in print,? Collier gives step-by-step advice on the #1 skill anyone can have: how to sell with the written word. Just reading some of his classic salesletters over and over helped me recognize effective copywriting and start creating it myself.

Jon Spoelstra, ?Ice To The Eskimos? and ?Marketing Outrageously? Two fun-to-read books full of actionable ideas and real-life examples of their implementation by a hired gun of the pro sports world, often called upon to turn around under-performing franchises. Even if you don?t actually use any of the author?s strategies or tactics, just reading these two books will put you in the right ?problem-solving? mindset to stop feeling helpless or powerless and start realizing that you can achieve success even if you ? and everyone else around you ? thinks you can?t.

Claude Hopkins, ?My Life In Advertising? and ?Scientific Advertising? Two classics by one of the true pioneers and masters of direct response marketing and copywriting. If you don?t read and study Hopkins? simple formula for advertising success, you?re likely to become an ?advertising victim? and believe that the garbage that passes for modern advertising is anything more than the total waste of money that it is.

Eldridge and Eldridge, ?How To Position Yourself As The Obvious Expert? Very easy to read, with plenty of advice and examples of the power of getting prospects to chase you instead of the opposite. After reading this, you?ll know how and why to use basic ?information marketing? strategies and tactics to revolutionize your business by attracting more and better customers, clients or patients than ever before.

Denny Hatch, ?Million Dollar Mailings? An amazing collection of some of the most successful direct response marketing salesletter ever, with thorough explanations of how they were put together. Use it to learn exactly what makes a salesletter great, or as a ?swipe file? to create your own multi-million dollar pieces, or both. Just make sure to use it. Fairly expensive ? and easily worth 1,000 times the price to an action-taker.

David Ogilvy, ?Ogilvy On Advertising? Absolutely essential for anyone who either invests any of their hard-earned money into advertising, or who just wants to learn why the overwhelming majority of what passes for modern advertising is almost completely ineffective at best, if not completely wasteful.

John Caples, ?Tested Advertising Methods? Another phenomenal book on direct response marketing and what really works. Caution: The most current revision is not up to the standards of the classic version ? make sure to get the 4th Edition or earlier.

Joe Sugarman, ?Advertising Secrets of the Written Word? This Chicago native is one of the all-time most respected, admired and innovative marketing geniuses, and one of the best teachers of direct response marketing. This book is an entertaining and informative read, full of real-life examples and immediately-actionable advice.

Victor Schwab, ?How To Write A Good Advertisement?
Another classic that must be a part of every serious businessperson?s library. Even if you read no further than the opening chapter?s understated ?100 Good Headlines and Why They Were so Profitable,? you?ll have gotten a lot more than your money?s worth and greatly improved your marketing skill. This chapter alone has saved me untold hours and dollars attempting to ?reinvent the wheel? by providing me with winning headline templates ? and the psychology behind each of them ? that have brought in millions of dollars for me and my clients.

Robert Cialdini, ?Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion? Very entertaining and engaging, with plenty of stories and scientific research to back up every point. I have personally used all six of the basic principles of influence that Cialdini teaches to bring in millions of dollars in dozens of different businesses. All of direct response marketing comes down to math and behavioral psychology, and this is the best book ever written on what makes consumers take action.

Eugene Schwartz, ?Breakthrough Advertising? This book is extremely rare and out of print. You should be in no rush to get it until you?ve read all of the other books on this list multiple times. It is extremely advanced and a very difficult read ? definitely only for the most advanced direct marketing students and practitioners. That said, it is easily the most powerful and potentially life-changing book on this list.

If you read, study and use these books over the summer, or even within the next year or two, your income and lifestyle will forever be changed in a major, positive way.

Oh, and by the way?

If you?ve always wanted to write a book of your own, and you?re in the Chicagoland area, you?ll want to meet world-famous author and publisher Adam Witty on Monday, June 18th at 7:00pm and learn:

?How To Easily Write A Book (In 1 Day Or Less), Use It To Grow Your Business, And Make A King?s Ransom?

Who knows? Maybe your book will make a ?best of? list like this one someday ? or it will just make you a whole lot of money?

Crystals found in magma chambers may help scientists predict volcanic eruptions

To learn more about volcanic activity in an effort to help predict it, researchers investigated the magma from within volcanoes. Crystals often grow within magma chambers, large crevices of searing hot fluid rock beneath volcanoes.

By peering at crystals encased within volcanic rock, scientists could get a better idea of when eruptions will occur, researchers say.

More than 500 million people live close to volcanoes that could erupt with little or no clear warning, causing widespread devastation and even global effects on climate, as in the case of the?1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo. Although scientists keep an eye on many of the world's volcanoes for ground movements, gas emissions and other signs of unrest, volcanologists still face challenges directly linking surface activity with volcanic plumbing changes deep underground.

To learn more about volcanic activity in an effort to help predict it, researchers investigated the magma from within volcanoes. Crystals often grow within magma chambers, large crevices of searing hot fluid rock beneath volcanoes.

"Crystals can be thought of like a book," said researcher Kate Saunders, a volcanologist at the University of Bristol in England. "If we understand how to read them, they contain vital information on formation of the magma." Changes in magma behavior recorded in crystals might in turn shed light on volcanic activity. [World's 5 Most Active Volcanoes]

Crystal growth

Crystals within magma often grow in concentric zones. This makes them like tree rings ? thin ones reflect times of little growth, while thick ones represent much growth. Each zone also has a subtly distinct chemical makeup that mirrors changes in physical conditions within magma chambers, thus giving clues on internal volcanic activity.

Saunders and her colleagues analyzed orthopyroxene crystals within volcanic rocks taken from nine different eruptions at Mount St. Helens in Washington state, from 1980 to 1986. The volcano is best known for its?spectacular eruption in 1980.

The researchers discovered the rims of the crystals typically grew within 12 months of each eruption. Peaks in crystal growth were linked with?increased earthquake activity?and flow of sulfur dioxide gas at the volcano.

"Such a correlation between crystal growth and volcanic seismicity has been long anticipated, but to see such clear evidence of this relationship is remarkable," Saunders told OurAmazingPlanet.

Volcano vital signs

Although this work cannot lead scientists to predict the time and day of an eruption, "the more we understand the internal workings of a volcano, the better idea we have," Saunders said. "You wouldn't ask a doctor to predict the exact time of someone's death. However, by monitoring a patient's vital signs, they are able to provide a much more thorough diagnosis.

"The same is also true with volcanoes. The more we know about the processes that occur beneath them and the time scales over which these occur, the better we can anticipate their behavior and?timing of future eruptions."

The researchers hope to examine other volcanoes and compare their results with other volcano-monitoring techniques.

The best plan, Saunders said, may be to collect rocks from eruptions "50 years, 100 years, 1 million years ago and interrogate these samples to investigate whether the volcano is behaving in a similar predicable manner and whether we can use this knowledge to help us to watch for similar signs in the monitoring record."

Saunders and her colleagues detailed their findings in the May 25 issue of the journal Science.

Polly Paulusma - Leaves from the Family Tree (2012)

In 2003 Paulusma was happily putting the finishing touches to shed-recorded debut album ?Scissors in my Pocket? when Bjork?s label One Little Indian signed her up and catapulted her round the world for six years, supporting Bob Dylan, Jamie Cullum, Joseph Arthur, Coldplay and many others. Now she?s set up her own label Wild Sound and is releasing her third offering, Leaves from the Family Tree. From humble musical beginnings in a garden shed, Polly Paulusma was signed to Bjork?s label One Little Indian in 2003 and in 2004 released her self-produced, home-shed-recorded debut album Scissors In My Pocket to international critical acclaim. Uncut Magazine gave Scissors In My Pocket **** calling her ?the finest young female British singer-songwriter to emerge over the last 12 months? (in a year that saw Amy Winehouse and Joss Stone step into the limelight). The Independent heralded her ?the most literate songwriter of her generation?. Scissors? was playlisted on BBC Radio 2 and championed by Michael Parkinson and Terry Wogan, to name but a few.

In 2012 (and two children later), Paulusma now releases her third album, Leaves from the Family Tree. She is founder of label Wild Sound and the proud owner of a caravan called Ella (to make touring with her young family a possibility ? but only in the school holidays!). On this joyful third album, she has e-collaborated with folk heroes Adem and Erin McKeown, rock violin diva Anna Phoebe and acclaimed film composer Michael Price of recent Sherlock fame, combining recordings from her garden shed, Pinewood Studios, and everywhere in between to create an insightful representation of the joys and complications of modern family life.

Career and Business Advice for College Students

The business world can be a terrifying and confusing place for the average college student to enter. While it is mostly juniors and senior sweating about their life after college, underclassmen as well are constantly reminded that their college utopia will end someday and that they, too, will have to enter the ?real world?. For students trying to find jobs, just navigating through the seas of applications and interviews that come with landing a position is overwhelming enough.

Many have a very fuzzy idea of where their career will lead them. Should they have an entrepreneurial spirit, this picture is even less clear. Things associated with starting a new business ? such as finding a location, business partners, and reliable employees ? are not even on their radar, and nor should they be. While it is important for graduating students and rising seniors to keep these things in mind, they must also keep their situation in perspective. Most undergraduates finish college at 22 years old ? if they do not plan on going to graduate school, this means that they will enter the workforce in their early 20?s and most likely work until their late 50s or early 60s. This means that the majority of their years will be spent working; there is no need to worry about every detail of their career at this moment if they have almost 40 years to shape it.

Storm Chances for North Texas Next Two Nights, Then Cooler Weather!

There is a Slight Risk Outlook for severe weather this evening and overnight. Our chances for storms don?t look as good as they did last night, but we will have to watch storms that develop along the dryline to our west and the stationary?front to our north. Storms that develop in Oklahoma could dive SE toward North Texas tonight. Areas NE of Dallas (i.e. Paris, Sulphur Springs, Bonham) have a slightly better chance of seeing the Oklahoma storms move in after sunset into the night. But for Dallas/Fort Worth, there is a slight chance of storms this evening and overnight, but overall doesn?t look like last night. We, of course, will have to wait and see what bubbles up this afternoon to our north and west. That will determine what happens later tonight. Be sure to get the latest on CBS 11 News at 4, 5 and 6.

Justin Bieber Kicks It Old-School For 'Die In Your Arms'

Bieber pays homage to Motown soul with new Believe single.
By Jocelyn Vena

Justin Bieber on his "Believe" album cover
Photo: Justin Bieber/ Twitter

Justin Bieber's new single "Die in Your Arms" is full of funky beats, Motown harmonies and good old-fashioned romantic longing. In the song, produced by Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, Bieber just wants to make the apple of his eye believe he loves her so much that he'd rather die in her arms than be away from her for too long.

The song's vintage swing, finger snaps and melodies certainly recall the heyday of feel-good R&B from the 1960s, which is mirrored in the song's sentiment. On the chorus, Bieber sings, "Honestly, the truth is, if I could just die in your arms/ I wouldn't mind/ 'Cause every time you touch me/ I just die in your arms/ It feels so right/ So baby, baby, baby, please don't stop girl."

In keeping with the song's vintage feel, at one point, he breaks from singing to say, "Oh, baby, I know loving you ain't easy, but it sure is worth a try."

"Die" is the follow-up to the more pop-'n'-b-leaning "Boyfriend," which he dropped back in March. Last week he dropped a remix to the song, featuring 2 Chainz, Mac Miller and Asher Roth, which certainly ups the song's hip-hop ante quite a bit. "And we can be like Selena and Biebs/ Wild and free, a couple disobedient teens/ Sneaking out to meet like two o' clock in the eve/ Paparazzi ain't a problem, we just hide on the beach," Roth spits on the track.

Bieber is currently abroad promoting his June 19 album release, Believe, amid allegations he got into a scuffle with a paparazzo over the weekend while out in Los Angeles with girlfriend Selena Gomez.

"i hope when you guys hear #BELIEVE you finally understand how i feel about you. I appreciate and love you. this is about us. thank you," he tweeted over the weekend about the album release, shortly after news broke of the fray with the photographer.

Fighting US's worst teen pregnancy rate in Miss.

MARKS, Miss. (AP) ? With her hair in a ponytail and her smile quick and wide, it's hard to tell that high school junior Donyell Hollins has been pulling all-nighters for most of the semester to take care of her infant daughter.

Her situation isn't unusual in the small Delta town of Marks, home to one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the state that leads the nation in the statistic. But unlike teen mothers in previous decades, 18-year-old Hollins is benefiting from a change in attitude that's paving the way for frank discussions about parenting skills, career goals and contraception.

Instructors from the Delta Health Partners Healthy Start Initiative come to Hollins' high school monthly to teach lessons that incorporate some of the newest theories on the relationship between poverty and teen motherhood. It's a far cry from decades past, when women in Hollins' situation were given little guidance and often left to drop out and languish.

Part of the goal is to change patterns of communication about sex that have persisted for years.

"I'm going to talk to her more about it, inform her," Hollins said of her 5-month-old daughter. "'Cause I didn't have that talk with my mom. I had to learn on my own."

The Delta Initiative, run through Tougaloo College since 1999, is a forerunner in the state's changing attitude toward teen pregnancy. Next year, a new state law will require schools to teach sex education, and they'll have more leeway in how much information they can incorporate about birth control. Schools previously had to get special permission to teach anything but abstinence. Delta Health Partners' classes are run independently of the school districts' curriculum, though they use classrooms at welcoming schools to make it convenient for the girls to attend.

Republican Gov. Phil Bryant has also created a task force to discuss ways to reduce teen pregnancy ? considered an important acknowledgement of the problem in a state where elected leaders were once loathe to discuss it.

Mississippi's teen birth rate declined modestly over the past decade as rates around the country fell. But Mississippi still has 55 births per 1,000 15- to 19-year-old girls, compared to a national average of 34.3, according to the most recent figures from the federal government's National Center for Health Statistics.

Experts say there was a culture of silence around the issue for decades in Mississippi, allowing the problem to build. Teen mothers were expected to drop out of school, or even leave town.

Delta Health Partners work in one of the poorest sections of the poorest state in the U.S. Recent research by economists Phillip Levine of Wellesley College and Melissa Kearney of the University of Maryland challenges the long-held assumption that pregnancy is a deciding factor in whether a young woman slides into poverty.

"If two identical people going down a path in life, did the one who had a baby do particularly worse?" Levine asked. "It's hard to find evidence that's true."

In the Marks classroom, more than a dozen girls told Delta Health Partners caseworkers about their plans to become nurses, pediatricians and cosmetologists.

When asked how their pregnancies have impacted their lives, 19-year-old Shalendrick Tribble said things are largely the same.

"There's just certain things at certain times you can and cannot do," she said.

"For me, it got harder," Hollins chimed in. "My mom, she helps me to a certain extent. But she's trying to make me responsible, so she makes me do everything."

It was clear from the girls' stories that life has become more complicated. Some parents gave them the silent treatment. Others had watched boyfriends promise support, and then ignore them when asked to take on the responsibility of fatherhood. They also told of friends who dropped out of school when they couldn't arrange childcare.

Delta Health Partners is not the only initiative aimed at addressing teen pregnancy. The Mississippi Department of Human Services lists more than two dozen resource centers that provide education on teen pregnancy, and some districts work with the girls to keep them in school.

States such as Idaho and Texas have public schools designed specifically for pregnant and parenting teens, which provide in-school daycare. Deborah Hedden-Nicely, head teacher at the Marian Pritchett High School in Boise, Idaho, says schools designed specifically for teen parents make a difference by pushing them to finish high school and go to college.

"Our mascot is a mortar board and a diploma," Hedden-Nicely said. "We have speakers who come in and tell them, 'yes, life is going to throw down roadblocks. You've got to get around them.'"

Advocates say that fighting teen pregnancy ultimately requires a lot more than sex education classes.

"It really circles back to education and job opportunities, it circles back to health care, to generational poverty," said Jamie Bardwell of the Mississippi Women's Fund. "These are all interconnected issues with lots of different players. Good people are working on it, but we have to realize for the teen birthrate going down, we need more than people talking about it. We need legislative action. We need more funding for this issue."

Research by Levine and Kearney underscores this message. When poor young women are pessimistic about their chances of reaching the next economic class, researchers say they tend to care less about whether they'll get pregnant.

The Delta Health Partners know they must fight this ambivalence and instill in the girls hope that they can accomplish their goals. To do this, they visit the girls both in 17 Delta high schools and at their homes.

A recent visit to Hollins' school, Madison S. Palmer High School in Marks, was the last day the case workers would see some of the girls in school before graduation.

Jodi Bailey, a nurse and case manager, read off some statistics to the students. Half of high school students who get pregnant don't graduate. Three in 10 girls in the U.S. will get pregnant before age 20.

"We want to keep you in high school, we want you to graduate and say 'I did it,'" Bailey said. "If you're having problems, we're here. We'll help you any way we can, OK?"

For its part, the Marks school district plans to adopt a curriculum to include more comprehensive sex-education, which will still emphasize the benefits of abstinence.

Some in the small town about 70 miles south of Memphis, Tenn., still think teen pregnancy should be addressed in the home, not the classroom. Harold Smith, a local evangelical pastor, said sex outside marriage is a sin and parents ? not educators ? should teach children to avoid it.

"You've got to spread the gospel," Smith said. "If they get a hold of God just right, they won't have (children)."

But limiting discussion to the home didn't work for Hollins: "I wish my mom would have talked to me more about sex."

That's why Delta Health Partners is seeking to change the pattern.

"You've got to do something different," said social worker Debra McGee. "You cannot keep doing the same thing and expect a different result."

Community Foundation drive a success

By BRANDON L. SUMMERS - Messenger staff writer , Messenger News

Gear For Kids, a recent athletic gear drive held by the Fort Dodge Community Foundation and United Way, was a tremendous success, according to Mary Jo Wagner, foundation development director.

Through the drive - held May 3 and 4 - 23 families and 57 individuals are being helped, Wagner said.

"It was about 300 items total. We got a lot of balls and bats, which I thought was pretty exciting," she said. "I was pleased."

The drive collected new and used athletic gear for needy children for all sports and many activities, including 18 baseball bats, 32 balls and 31 gloves, six footballs, 15 basketballs, 23 soccer balls and 17 shin guards, 22 softballs, nine tennis rackets, two volleyballs, four pairs of ice hockey skates, and a pair of rollerblades, among other items.

So many shoes were donated, Wagner said, that, lined up, they spanned the length of the old Fareway building, the drive donation site.

"I had a lot of people say, 'I just cleaned out my closet and I'll keep this in mind for next year,'" she said. "Kids, as they grow, they keep going through this stuff quite rapidly, so parents accumulate a lot of sporting gear equipment in a short period of time."

Parents weren't the only ones contributing, Wagner said.

"We had grandmothers - their grandkids had grown out of the stuff they had, like play stuff. We got four complete youth golf sets. We didn't even anticipate those," she said.

The athletic gear is distributed among specific needy families through the foundation's partner, the Webster County Family Development Council.

"They have to qualify for Upper Des Moines services, so they would be considered low-income and they would qualify for this," Alisa Schlief, council president, said. "We're not going to just give them away to anybody. They've got to be families that they're serving or are being served by one of the human service agencies in Fort Dodge."

The need was great, Wagner said.

"We had a team, one whole team, that there were quite a few kids on it that needed help, and so that's what we're looking for," she said. "Alisa knew of 10 kids for soccer that needed help. They couldn't afford the gear and stuff."

The council also independently provides summer scholarships for athletic activities, helping 40 families and 123 individuals so far, Schlief said.

Cash donations were also received during the drive to purchase pool passes for needy children, Wagner said. The council had set aside $1,000 for passes, which was bolstered by an additional $5,000 from the Community Foundation, through its YouthNet program.

"We had a lot of generous companies that helped with YouthNet," she said. "It's kind of neat because people, even that don't maybe have that can say, here's a couple of pool passes. If everybody does that, a lot of kids get to go to the pool."

According to Wagner, the Community Foundation board has recommended holding the drive annually.

"Once people know that, they're going to start keeping their stuff and bringing it. It's a way, every summer, to get these kids out of the house and doing something," she said. "That's something we want to keep doing and building each year. We want to be able to connect families and get them the help they need."

Wagner said she remains as astonished by the community's continued generosity.

"I am amazed," she said. "Fort Dodge (is a ) really a good community."

Plans are already being made for future drives and efforts that will benefit the needy children of Fort Dodge, Wagner said.

Mark the Legacy of Industry-Changing Artists

Although many theories exist as to where the true origins of music lay, the sound of instruments or lyrics have played a fundamental role within every known culture. Such is the impact that music has made over the years, it is commonly referred to as the universal language. From psalms composed and sang by King David a thousand years before Christ, to the current crop of artists who perform worldwide today, music has made a significant impact upon the lives of many.

Throughout all genres of music, certain artists, whether it is solo acts, double acts or a band have made a significant impact which is long remembered as a legacy. As individuals have their own divided opinions on what consists as music, there are a number of artists who are heralded as playing a fundamental role within changing the music industry.

The overall success of an artist may ultimately determine their legacy within the music industry. However, it is through their music that engrosses the worldwide population and shapes the demographics of the industry for the greater good. Purchasing memorabilia is a perfect form of remembering the impact an artist had on the industry, either through a multi-million selling album or their overall contribution to music.

Elvis Pressley and The Beatles are archetypal of artists at the tip of individuals' lips when asked to name those who changed the music industry with their ability. Music collectables are formed to acclaim such artists, even after they have disbanded or passed away; the legacy they established ultimately remains in existence.

Memorabilia usually consists of an LP record encased within a photo frame, with album art and a description of the official number of sold copies and awards received also included. When displayed within a residential or commercial building space, it can serve as a perfect reminder of the significant impact and contribution an artist made to the music industry.

Whether it is purchased as a gift or as a personal item, music collectables can ultimately mark the appreciation and impact an artist had on their life through their lyrics or use of instruments.

Bart Scott, Jamaal WestermanAP

Jets linebacker Bart Scott is the latest player to come forward to say that even though the game of football has been great for his own life, he doesn?t think it?s worth the risk of injury for his son.

Scott told the New York Daily News that even though he has been richly rewarded for playing the game he loves, he doesn?t believe it?s the right sport for most people.

?I don?t want my son to play football,? Scott said. ?I play football so he won?t have to. With what is going on, I don?t know if it?s really worth it. . . . I don?t want to have to deal with him getting a concussion and what it would be like later in life.?

Keeping kids inside a protective bubble has plenty of risks, too ? there are a lot more kids struggling with health problems related to obesity than there are kids struggling with health problems related to football ? but Scott said his 7-year-old son will get his exercise through non-contact sports.

?He can play baseball,? Scott said. ?I really don?t want him boxing, either, even though he wants to box. I won?t let him box. It?s not worth it. The most important thing for me is him being around and me being able to spend a long time with him and I?m sure, at the end of the day, all the things I?m able to buy him from playing football, he?d much rather have me.?

Scott also knows, however, that if a kid is intent on playing football, it?s awfully tough for his parents to stop him.

?I can?t stop him from doing what he wants to do, but I would advise him and try to push other things in his face that may interest him,? he said. ?The more you tell him not to, the more he?s going to do it. I would support it, because he?s my son, but I also would try to push baseball in his face.?

If 7-year-old B.J. is as intense as his dad, it?s probably safe to say he can?t wait to get out on the football field, no matter how much his dad tries to steer him in another direction.

Brian Banks, Former California Football Standout, Cleared of Rape, Kidnapping Conviction [Video]

brian-banks-exonerated Wanetta Gibson rape conviction 2012Brian Banks, a former California high school football standout, has been cleared of a rape and kidnapping conviction that derailed his life more than 10 years ago.

Banks, who is 26 today, was just 17 when his classmate, Wanetta Gibson ? who he?d known since middle school ? told authorities he sexually assaulted her.

?We went into an area on campus that is known as a makeout spot, we kissed, we groped we touched, but we never had sex,? Banks told ABC, recalling the incident. ?We ended things on a good note. I went back to class, by the end of the day I was in custody.?

At the time, the star middle linebacker had been awarded a full scholarship to the University of Southern California along with several other Division I schools, including Michigan State University and University of Kansas.

After being charged with rape and kidnapping in 2002, Banks took a plea deal on the advice of his lawyer to avoid spending the rest of his life behind bars despite knowing he was innocent. His accuser, Wanetta Gibson, collected $1.5 million after suing the school over lack of safety on campus.

Banks was sentenced to six years, ruining his football career and was forced to wear an ankle bracelet after being released on parole in 2008.

While the Bank?s future seemed bleak ? another potential star athlete ruining their life with one bad decision ? the unbelievable happened February 28, 2011, when Gibson requested his friendship on Facebook.

?Why would you friend request me?? Banks asked Gibson over Facebook. ?The reply was, ?I figured you and I could let bygones be bygones. I was immature then, but I?m much more mature now.??

CBS reports Gibson then met with Banks in person and pledged to help him clear his name, but she was reluctant to reiterate her story to prosecutors because she didn?t want to give back the $1.5 million civil judgment awarded to her.

Despite Gibson?s hesitance, Banks was able to secretly record her admitting his innocence, which was enough for a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge to reverse the conviction.

?To finally have my freedom back, I couldn?t ask for more,? said Banks, adding he he no feelings of revenge towards his accuser.

MSNBC has more on Brian Banks? false rape allegations, exoneration and plans for the future in the video below:

Afraid of needles? Futuristic syringe doesn?t need them

15 hrs.

Getting a shot may soon be nearly painless, according to researchers developing a new type of syringe.

The device is able to blast a high-pressure jet of medicine at the speed of sound through a person?s skin without the aid of a hypodermic needle.?

The jet is about the same diameter as a mosquito?s proboscis, Ian Hunter, a mechanical engineer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, explains in the video below.?

?As many of you know, you don?t feel when the mosquito inserts its proboscis into your skin because it?s so very narrow,? he said.

While needle-less syringes have been around for a few years, the prototype device Hunter and his colleagues are developing can be fine-tuned to control the depth and speed of drug delivery.

For example, a shot may start with a super high-pressure blast to penetrate the skin, but then scaled back to deliver the drug in a slower stream.

This variable adjustment of the jet may ring familiar to fans of Star Trek, where medical officers are constantly fiddling?with drugs and doses.

This is all possible thanks to a mechanism called a Lorentz-force actuator that MIT describes in a news release as:

A small, powerful magnet surrounded by a coil of wire that?s attached to a piston inside a drug ampoule. When current is applied, it interacts with the magnetic field to produce a force that pushes the piston forward, ejecting the drug at very high pressure and velocity. ? The speed of the coil and the velocity imparted to the drug can be controlled by the amount of current applied.

The device can be programmed for different types of skin ? a baby getting the whooping cough vaccine at the doctor?s office, for example, has softer skin than parents and grandparents who might also need the shot.

According to Hunter, the device can be used for delivery of drugs right through the eye into the retina as well as the inner ear.?

The device can also be programmed to vibrate, which is able to make powdered drugs behave as if they were a liquid, which means it can inject powdered vaccines in parts of the world that lack refrigeration.

Pauly Shore Could Be In the Army Again

Remember In The Army Now, the hit comedy of 1994 that had audiences rolling in aisles, gasping for air between fits of laughter, and racking up hundreds of millions of dollars in box office returns? No, because none of the preceding sentence is true except for the fact that In The Army Now did, indeed, come out in 1994. (To put things in perspective, its nearly $29 million gross was only good enough to make it the third-highest grossing Pauly Shore movie.) But that?s not stopping billionaire Alki David, the CEO behind FilmOn.TV, from funding a sequel starring Shore and Andy Dick, who appeared in the first film. His site also hosts talk shows by such luminaries as Dick, Kato Kaelin, and Jersey Shore?s ?The Situation.? Apparently on a recent episode of Dick?s show, Shore dropped the, ?We shoulda made a sequel? line, adding, ?We should rescue Katy Perry from a USO show gone bad or something.? Lest we doubt him, Shore has said he's super serious about this, you guys. Tentatively titled In The Army Again, the film now has a treatment, per Dick, and a script will be following shortly. The A.V. Club even received a press release from FilmOn.TV announcing the project, which means it will definitely happen. Unless it never does.
