Campers splash into spring break | The Miami Hurricane

On the shores of Miami Beach, 27 staff members and 12 campers take to the waves this week to put their surfing skills to the test during the University of Miami-Nova Southeastern University?s Center for Autism and Related Disabilities? (UM-NSU CARD) Surf Camp.
The annual program located at South Pointe Park hosts 12 children between the ages of 8 and 12 who have autism. These high- and low-functioning children spend the week of their spring break learning how to surf.
Of the 7,000 families at CARD, these 12 children are selected after going through an interview process to evaluate their ability to thrive on their own without familiar faces.
?This is a camp to focus on their abilities, instead of their disabilities,? said Maricarmen Saleta, an educational specialist at UM-NSU CARD who helped plan the program in 2007.
After meeting Michael Alessandri, executive director of CARD, Saleta moved to Miami in 2005 and began working for him at UM-NSU CARD. In 2007, Julio Magrisso, assistant director of the recreation division for the city of Miami Beach, saw a documentary about a similar camp in California for children with disabilities. Immediately inspired, he contacted Alessandri, who passed the project on to Saleta, and the two groups began co-planning the camp.
The weeklong program, funded by the Autism Society of Miami and private sponsors acquired at CARD?s annual ?Tropical Nights? fundraiser, is free to campers and their families.
The program first took place in 2008 and hosted two sessions. However, each year since, they have only been able to offer one session due to funding.
The city already had a summer Surf Camp organized for ordinary kids, so it was easy to adapt the same staff and instructors for CARD?s program, said Edith Guerra, a Miami-Beach Parks and Recreation Supervisor who has worked for the camp since its inception.
Guerra feels that the camp is an opportunity for everyone to recognize the true potential of the kids, regardless of their disabilities.
?When you get a chance to see the parents see what they?re children have learned, they?re just so surprised,? she said. ?They think, ?I never thought my child would be able to do something like this.??
The children enjoy it as much as the parents.
?I feel happy,? said 10-year-old camper Jake Stempel when asked about his surfing experience.
Jack Ruderman, a 9-year-old camper, agreed.
?I do it because I like to surf and ? I have a lot a friends,? he said.
In the future, CARD and Miami Beach are talking about expanding the recreational activities to other sports, according to Guerra. In addition to the surf program, CARD already hosts soccer and tennis programs.
Saleta hopes more children will be able to participate in this rewarding experience.
?It?s an amazing experience for these kids,? she said. ?It?s amazing to see their face when they get up on the board.?

North Korea reportedly cuts 3G for tourists, restricts access to long term visitors
It was just a month ago that North Korea started allowing mobile internet access to visitors (while still restricting it from citizens), but now a tour group says that program has ended. First reported by North Korea Tech, a post on the Koryo Group site indicates that tourists can still purchase SIM cards for international calling, but internet access is not available, a return to its policy from January. A recent blog post from the 22nd goes into more detail, explaining that 3G Koryolink access for foreigners "has been restricted to long term visitors/residents of Pyongyang only." With no word from the government on the policy change you'll have to insert your own reasoning, although we'll imagine Eric Schmidt is not pleased.

A look at RIM's much-delayed BlackBerry 10
Research In Motion Ltd. offered a glimpse Thursday at how its new BlackBerry 10 phones have been selling in Canada and abroad. Details on the U.S. are not expected for another three months.
The BlackBerry 10 is widely considered crucial to the company's future. RIM faced several delays getting phones with the software out. The delay could make it even harder for RIM to regain market share lost to Apple's iPhone and devices running Google's Android operating software.
Here's a look at developments surrounding the BlackBerry 10 in recent months:
Oct. 18, 2011: RIM unveils a new operating system, combining existing BlackBerry elements with RIM's previously announced QNX operating system for phones and tablet computers.
Dec. 6: RIM says "BlackBerry 10" will be the new name for its next-generation system after the company loses a trademark ruling on its previous name, BBX.
Dec. 15: RIM says new phones running BlackBerry 10 won't be out until late 2012, instead of early 2012 as previously expected. The company says the phones will need a highly integrated chipset that won't be available until mid-2012, so the company can now expect the new phones to ship late in the year.
May 1, 2012: RIM unveils a newly designed smartphone prototype powered by BlackBerry 10. The prototype BlackBerry has a touch screen, but no physical keyboard like most BlackBerry models. No update is given on the new system's launch date.
May 2: Company stresses that while the prototype has no physical keyboard, RIM will continue to make some models with one.
June 21: Company says the first BlackBerry device running BlackBerry 10 will not have a physical keyboard, only a touch-screen one. Ones with hard keyboards will eventually be made, but the company declines to say when.
June 28: RIM says it's delaying the launch of BlackBerry 10 yet again, to the first quarter of next year. CEO Thorsten Heins says RIM's top priority is a successful launch of the new BlackBerrys. He adds, "I will not deliver a product to the market that is not ready to meet the needs of our customers. There will be no compromise on this issue."
July 10: At its annual shareholders meeting, Heins asks disgruntled investors for patience as it develops BlackBerry 10. He says the product's quality is more important than rushing out the software, and he says some telecom carriers prefer a 2013 launch because next-generation wireless networks will be more widely operational by then.
Aug. 23: RIM says it has begun showing its new BlackBerry smartphones to wireless carriers around the world, but it remains "months and months" away from starting to sell them. The company says feedback from those carriers has been positive, and it will begin to discuss product launches and other business aspects with the carriers soon.
Sept. 25: Heins promises to restore the BlackBerry phone's stature as a trailblazing device even as many investors fret about its potential demise. Heins speaks at a conference for mobile applications developers to rally support for BlackBerry 10.
Oct. 31: RIM says its BlackBerry 10 smartphones are now being tested by 50 wireless carriers around the world. The company calls it a key step.
Nov. 12: RIM says it will hold an official launch event for BlackBerry 10 smartphones on Jan. 30.
Nov. 13: RIM says the phones will be released "not too long" after the launch event.
Nov. 29: RIM's stock rises after Goldman Sachs upgraded the company's shares, saying there's a "30 percent chance" that BlackBerry 10 smartphones will be a success.
Dec. 13: RIM says the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency will launch a pilot program with its smartphones using BlackBerry 10.
Jan. 30, 2013: RIM kicks off new BlackBerry 10 with events in New York and elsewhere. It unveils the first two phones ? the Z10, with a touch-screen keyboard, and the Q10, with a physical keyboard as well. RIM also says it will change the company's name to BlackBerry.
Jan. 31: The Z10 model goes on sale in the U.K.
Feb. 4: RIM's CEO says early signs show that sales in the U.K. are strong, with many buyers switching from other systems rather than upgrading from older BlackBerrys. He narrows the Z10 launch in the U.S. to mid-March and says the Q10 model might not be available in the U.S. for another eight to 10 weeks, even though some wireless providers elsewhere should get it in April.
Feb. 5: The Z10 model goes on sale in Canada.
Thursday: RIM announces that it sold 1 million BlackBerry 10 phones in the quarter that ended March 2, above the 915,000 that analysts were expecting. Details on U.S. sales are not part of the results because the Z10 became available there after the quarter ended. But RIM lost about 3 million subscribers to end the quarter with 76 million. It's the second consecutive quarterly decline for RIM, whose subscriber based peaked at 80 million last summer.

Animals rock veteran Eric Burdon writing memoir
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Eric Burdon, the singer of the 1960s blues-rock band The Animals, is writing a memoir detailing his five decades in the music industry, publisher Alfred Music said on Tuesday.
The book, entitled "Breathless," will be released late this year, the publisher said.
Burdon, 71, best known for merging U.S. blues music with 1960s British rock and roll, said the book will be a way for him to recall and recount the many details of his musical life.
"I'm writing this book to help myself remember the past, acknowledge the present and help the new generation to discover their own truth," Burdon said in a statement.
Burdon and The Animals rose to prominence and scored a No. 1 hit with his menacing and intense singing on "The House of the Rising Sun" in 1964, turning it into a definitive rendition of the American folk song.
The Animals, who were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994, broke up in 1968 after five years together and reformed at times in the 1970s and 1980s. Burdon helped found the U.S. funk band War in 1969.
His latest solo album "'Til Your River Runs Dry" was released in January and was his first album of new material since 2006.

Molecular ?signature? for rapidly increasing form of esophageal cancer discovered
Mar. 24, 2013 ? During the past 30 years, the number of patients with cancers that originate near the junction of the esophagus and stomach has increased approximately 600 percent in the United States. The first extensive probe of the DNA of these esophageal adenocarcinomas (EACs) has revealed that many share a distinctive mix-up of letters of the genetic code, and found more than 20 mutated genes that had not previously been linked to the disease.
The research, led by scientists at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, the Broad Institute, and other research centers, may offer clues to why EAC rates have risen so sharply. The findings, which are being released as an advanced online publication by Nature Genetics, point to an array of abnormal genes and proteins that may be lynchpins of EAC cell growth and therefore serve as targets for new therapies, according to the study's authors.
"Adenocarcinomas of the esophagus, particularly those that arise at the gastroesophageal junction, were extremely uncommon 40 years ago and now account for approximately 15,000 new cases in the United States each year," said Adam Bass, MD, of Dana-Farber and the Broad Institute, who is co-senior author of the paper with Gad Getz, PhD, of the Broad Institute and Massachusetts General Hospital. "Unfortunately, it's also a disease with a generally poor prognosis: five years after diagnosis, only about 15 percent of patients are still alive."
Bass added that despite the increased incidence of EAC, there have been few new approaches to treatment. "The goal of our study was to identify abnormalities within the genome of EAC cells to develop a foundation to better understand these tumors, diagnose them earlier, and develop better treatments," explained Bass.
EAC is thought to be associated with chronic gastroesophageal reflux, which sends stomach acid gurgling into the esophagus. This produces a condition known as Barrett's esophagus, in which cells at the lower end of the esophagus change to resemble cells in the intestine. Patients with Barrett's esophagus often go on to develop EAC.
Researchers don't know why EAC rates are increasing, but they speculate that it may be due to a rise in obesity, particularly in men: A heavier abdomen puts increased pressure on the stomach, causing acid to back up into the esophagus.
In the new study, researchers "sequenced" specific sections of DNA in cells from 149 EAC tissue samples, reading the individual letters of the genetic code within those areas. They focused on the one percent of the genome that holds the codes for making cell proteins. They also sequenced the entire genome -- all the DNA within the cell nucleus -- of cells from 15 of these EAC samples. Prior to this study, the largest sequencing study of EAC involved only a dozen tumor samples.
"We discovered a pattern of DNA changes that had not been seen before in any other cancer type," Getz remarked. The pattern involved a subtle swap in one of the four "nucleobases" that form the rungs of the DNA double helix, often designated by the letters C, T, G, and A. The investigators found that in many places where an A nucleobase was followed by another A nucleobase, the second "A" was replaced by a "C," a process known as transversion.
"We found this type of transversion throughout the genomes of the EAC cells we analyzed," Bass stated. "Overall, about one-third of all the mutations we discovered within these cells involved this type of transversion. In some tumor samples, these transversions accounted for nearly half of all mutations," Getz added.
Although A-to-C changes are not commonly observed in cancer, there is some evidence that oxidative damage can produce these changes. (Oxidative damage occurs when cells cannot neutralize the potentially harmful products of oxygen's reactions with other molecules.) "Gastric reflux can produce this type of damage, suggesting that reflux may underlie this pattern of mutations," Bass commented.
In addition to the mutational "signature" of AA becoming AC, the research team identified 26 genes that were frequently mutated in the tumor samples. Five of these were "classic cancer genes" that had previously been implicated in EAC, Bass said, and the others were involved in a variety of cell processes.
Among the genes not previously linked to EAC were ELMO1 and DOCK2, mutations that can switch on a gene called RAC1, which can cause cancer cells to invade surrounding tissue. "The discovery of mutated ELMO1 and DOCK2 in many of these tumors may indicate that this invasive process is particularly active in EAC, promoting metastasis," Bass related. "We know that EAC tumors tend to spread at an earlier stage than many other cancers, which may help explain why survival rates for EAC patients tend to be low."
The RAC1 pathway -- the network of genes that control RAC1 activity -- is being pursued for pharmaceutical development. The discovery of ELMO1 and DOCK2 mutations in EAC samples may spur testing of new agents targeting this pathway in EAC, said Bass.
"Identifying the mutated genes within these tumors will help us understand the underlying biology of the disease," said Bass. "It also presents us with a slate of known genetic abnormalities that can someday be used to diagnose the disease at an early stage, classify tumors by the particular mutations within EAC cells, and ultimately develop treatment geared to precisely those mutations."

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. (AP) ? Sam Querrey won for the first time as the top-ranked American, rallying past Lukasz Kubot 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 Saturday at the Sony Open.
The 20th-ranked Querrey moved ahead of No. 23 John Isner this week.
On a sunny, humid afternoon, No. 6-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beat Viktor Troicki 7-6 (6), 6-3. No. 8 Richard Gasquet defeated qualifier Olivier Rochus 7-5, 6-2.
No. 18 Philipp Kohlschreiber lost to David Goffin 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-2.
In women's play, defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska, seeded fourth, lost serve seven times and needed nearly 2? hours to beat Magdalena Rybarikova 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-3. No. 9 Caroline Wozniacki lost to wild card Garbine Muguruza of Spain, 6-2, 6-4.
No. 5 Li Na beat No. 25 Varvara Lepchenko of the United States 6-2, 6-4. Seeded players had their opening matches after receiving first-round byes.
Querrey lost his first serve game but held the rest of the way and hit 12 aces against Kubot. The 25-year-old Querrey said being the top-ranked American has provided only a modest boost in confidence.
"Some days more than others," he said. "I never thought about it out there today. Haven't really thought about it much. Felt like another day out there to me. Nothing new."
Querrey won despite a lack of rest. He's staying near downtown Miami, site of a weekend electronic music festival.

Lebanese president accepts prime minister's resignation
BEIRUT (Reuters) - Lebanese President Michel Suleiman accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Najib Mikati on Saturday, local media said, paving the way for a caretaker government after a political standoff with the powerful Hezbollah movement.
Mikati's resignation could plunge Lebanon, already struggling to cope with a spillover of violence and refugees from neighboring Syria's civil war, into further turmoil and uncertainty three months ahead of a planned parliamentary election.
The resignation on Friday came after a two-day ministerial meeting remained deadlocked by a dispute with the Shi'ite group Hezbollah, a militant and political movement that has dominated Lebanese politics in recent years.
"I did not inform anyone of my decision in order to avoid any pressure from any side," he was quoted as telling President Suleiman by the local news website Naharnet.
"My decision was a personal one ... It is now important that dialogue among the Lebanese begin. I hope that the resignation will pave the way for a solution to the political deadlock in the country."
Hezbollah opposed extending the term of a senior security official and the creation of an oversight body for the planned June parliamentary elections, which may now be delayed over the collapse of Mikati's government.
Major General Ashraf Rifi, head of Lebanon's internal security forces, is due to retire early next month. Rifi, like Mikati, is a Sunni Muslim from Tripoli, and is distrusted by Hezbollah.
Mikati became prime minister in 2011 after Hezbollah and its partners brought down the unity government of Saad al-Hariri. But tensions over Syria have put him at odds with the group that brought him to power and which strongly backs President Bashar al-Assad's battle against rebels and protesters in Syria.
Mikati backed a policy of "dissociation" from the conflict, hoping to keep Lebanon from being dragged in to the two-year civil war in its larger neighbor.
Under Lebanon's confessional division of power, the prime minister must be a Sunni Muslim, the president a Maronite Christian and the speaker of parliament a Shi'ite Muslim.
Former Prime Minister Fouad Siniora, a close political ally of Hariri who has frequently called for Mikati to step down, said his resignation "opens the possibility of fresh dialogue" between Lebanon's political camps.
Mikati has sought to distance his country - which fought its own 15-year civil war - from Syria's strife. But in the ex-prime minister's home city of Tripoli, two people died in clashes on Friday between militants supporting opposing sides of the Syria conflict.
Sporadic clashes erupted for a third day in Tripoli on Saturday morning, residents said, with two wounded by sniper fire.
A tide of Syrian refugees pouring into the country, as well as Lebanon's own political turmoil have caused a sharp slowdown in Lebanon's economy and a 67 percent surge in its budget deficit last year.

PG&E is alerting customers to be aware of a telephone scam demanding immediate payment for allegedly past due electricity bills. This scam appears to specifically target Hispanic business customers.
PG&E customers in the Bay Area have reported receiving calls warning that their electric service will be disconnected unless they make immediate payment through a prepaid cash card, such as a PayPal or Green Dot card.
PG&E reminds customers that its representatives never ask for immediate payment with a prepaid cash card over the phone or in person. PG&E offers the following tips to help protect customers from potential scams:
- PG&E?s Credit Department will not ask for personal information or a credit card number over the phone.? Anyone who has received such a phone call and provided credit card or checking account information should report it immediately to the credit card company or bank and law enforcement.
- Customers with concerns about the legitimacy of a call about a past due bill, service request or request for personal information are encouraged to call PG&E at 1-800-743-5000.
- Customers always should to see identification before allowing anyone claiming to be a PG&E representative inside their home. PG&E employees always carry their identification and are willing to show it to you.
- If a person claiming to be a PG&E employee has identification and you still feel uncomfortable, call PG&E?s customer service line at 1-800-743-5000 to verify an appointment and/or PG&E?s presence in the community.? If you feel threatened in any way, notify local law enforcement immediately.

Punxsutawney Phil charged with fraud for early spring forecast

CLEVELAND (Reuters) - With a snow storm expected to batter the Plains, Midwest and East Coast this weekend, a spring-deprived Ohio prosecutor is taking out his frustration with the long winter on a famous prognosticating groundhog.
"I decided it was about time we indicted Punxsutawney Phil for fraud," said Mike Gmoser, prosecutor in Ohio's Butler County, in an interview Friday.
When he emerged from his burrow in Gobbler's Knob, Pennsylvania, Phil did not see his shadow, leading to a forecast of an early spring. Gmoser's mock indictment contends that the forecast was fraudulent.
The rodent is being charged with a single mock felony count of "Misrepresentation of Early Spring," which Gmoser said should be punishable by death.
Tom Kines, senior meteorologist for AccuWeather, said he understands why Gmoser and his fellow Ohioans might be inclined to take out their frustrations on the groundhog.
"The mid-Atlantic and upper Midwest have been experiencing record-coldest high temperatures, which means that the high temperatures have never been so cold," said Kines.
Kines added that a coast-to-coast storm front expected to hit this weekend is likely to bring more cold temperatures and even snow to areas that normally do not see snow this time of year, including Butler County in southwestern Ohio.
The news doesn't get any better for the upper Midwest, Great Lakes or Mid-Atlantic area.
"We don't expect to see springtime weather anytime soon and expect cold through the end of the month," Kines said. "The cold will ease up a bit the second half of April. But it will be a gradual thing."
Gmoser said he might be inclined to drop the case if he sees temperatures reach the 80s by mid-April.
Neither Phil, nor his keepers, could immediately be reached for comment.
Gmoser said his office will give Buckeye Chuck, the Ohio groundhog who also forecast an early spring, immunity if he testifies against Phil.
"I know his defenders are going to say he is just a dumb groundhog but, as we know ignorance, is not a defense of the law," said Gmoser.

Player safety rules passed by NFL owners
PHOENIX (AP) ? The NFL believes it made pro football safer, particularly for defensive players, with rule changes passed at the owners meetings.
Team owners on Wednesday barred ball carriers from using the crown of their helmets to make forcible contact with a defender in the open field. The previous day, they eliminated the peel-back block everywhere on the field.
"This meeting is primarily about evaluating our rules both from a safety standpoint and what we think we can do to improve and make the game better," Commissioner Roger Goodell said. "We made some very significant progress on both of those fronts."
The second significant player safety rule passed this week came with much debate ? and some criticism, naturally, from running backs. Several coaches and team executives expressed concern about officiating the new rule, but Goodell championed it and it passed 31-1. Cincinnati voted no.
But if it was good enough for football's greatest running back, NFL owners figure, it should work in the 21st century.
"Jim Brown never lowered his head," Pittsburgh Steelers president Art Rooney said with a smile. "It can be done."
The changes were the latest involving safety, and head injuries in particular, with the issue receiving heightened attention amid hundreds of lawsuits filed by former players claiming that the NFL did not do enough to prevent concussions in years past. League officials have defended the NFL's record and did so again Wednesday.
"I have always thought that player safety has been at the forefront of our discussion for a long, long time," said Atlanta Falcons President Rich McKay, co-chairman of the competition committee that recommends rule changes. "The game has gotten safer over time. Where we have really focused is on the big hits, the open field hits and hits where players truly can't defend themselves. In this step that we are taking, we are trying to protect the player from himself with respect to this rule."
The tuck rule, one of the most criticized in pro football, was eliminated. Now, if a quarterback loses control of the ball before he has fully protected it after opting not to throw, it is a fumble.
The Steelers were the only team to vote against getting rid of the tuck rule. New England and Washington abstained.
"We have so many continuing action plays, it's a different scope," said Ravens coach Marvin Lewis, also a member of the competition committee. "Because of the evolution of replay and putting turnovers into automatic reviews, it just seemed like an easier transition to make right now.
"It was put in before for player safety, but it is not being ruled as that. There's a mad scramble for the ball."
Peel-back blocks had been legal inside the tackle box, but now players can't turn back toward their goal line and block an opponent low from behind anywhere on the field.
Video review now will be allowed when a coach challenges a play that he is not allowed to. But the coach will be penalized or lose a timeout, depending on when he threw the challenge flag.
That change stems from Houston's Thanksgiving victory over Detroit in which Lions coach Jim Schwartz challenged a touchdown run by the Texans' Justin Forsett. Although officials clearly missed Forsett being down by contact before breaking free on the 81-yard run, when Schwartz threw the red flag on a scoring play that automatically is reviewed, the referee could not go to replay.
That loophole has been eliminated.
Goodell was eager to get approved the competition committee's proposal to outlaw the use of the crown of the helmet by ball carriers, and there was talk the vote would be tabled until May if the rule change didn't have enough support.
But after watching videos of the play that clearly showed the differences in legal and illegal moves by ball carriers, the owners voted yes ? and then applauded the decision, something Rams coach Jeff Fisher said is "rare."
"We had discussions with the players association and the players themselves, the coaches' subcommittee," said Fisher, co-chairman of the competition committee. "A lot of people talked to us about this rule and how to roll it out in our game."
The penalty will be 15 yards from the spot of the foul, and if the offensive and defensive players both lower their heads and use the crown of the helmet to make contact, each will be penalized.
"It'll certainly make our runners aware of what we expect relative to use of the helmet," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said. "One of the questions I ask a lot is who gains from this, offense or defense? And it's a toss-up as to which side of the ball has the advantage on this rule, if any. The main thing is it's pro-health and safety, and that's the big thing."
The owners discussed simply using fines on ball carriers to eliminate the tactic, but instead voted to make the rule change.
Goodell announced that the Pro Bowl will be held in Honolulu on Jan. 26, the Sunday before the Super Bowl. The commissioner has considered scrapping the all-star game, but was satisfied with the level of performance in this year's matchup, won 62-25 by the NFC.
He added that the system for choosing the players won't change, but some consideration has been given to having team captains select their rosters, rather than an AFC vs. NFC format.
The Rooney Rule that requires every team to interview at least one minority candidate when there is a coaching or general manager opening was discussed at length. This year, with eight coaching vacancies and seven for GMs, no minority candidates were hired.
Goodell said he was disappointed in those results and would like to see more flexibility when teams ask to interview candidates whose clubs still are playing.
"One of the major focuses we've had was that we are going to reinstate the symposium program that we've had in the past," Goodell said. "That was primarily focused on coaches, but we are likely to have some potential GM candidates also attend with the coaches."
The owners also approved tight ends and H-backs wearing numbers between 40 and 49. Previously, they were supposed to have numbers in the 80s.

Library of Congress to Preserve 1st Message from Space
The first audio message to be relayed from outer space will be preserved as part of the National Recording Registry alongside Pink Floyd's "The Dark Side of the Moon," Simon and Garfunkel's "Sounds of Silence," and Chubby Checker's rendition of "The Twist," the Library of Congress announced Thursday (March 21).
The space-based message, which was a recording of then-President Dwight Eisenhower conveying "America's wish for peace on Earth and goodwill toward men everywhere," was broadcast Dec. 19, 1958, from aboard the world's first communications satellite, Project Signal Communications by Orbiting Relay Equipment, or SCORE.
The 30-second transmission, heard by shortwave radio as the satellite passed overhead, is one of 25 recordings that were selected by the Library of Congress because of their cultural, artistic and historic importance to the aural legacy of the United States.
"Congress created the [Registry] to celebrate the richness and variety of our audio heritage," said James Billington, Librarian of Congress, in a statement. "And to underscore our responsibility for long-term preservation, to assure that legacy can be appreciated and studied for generations."
Under the National Recording Preservation Act, Billington, as Librarian, and with advice from the National Recording Preservation Board, is tasked every year with selecting 25 recordings that are "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" and are at least 10 years old. The selections for 2012 bring the total number of recordings held in the registry to 375. [Video: 1st Song Recorded in Space]
SCORE for space history
Project SCORE was not the United States' first satellite in space ? that distinction goes to Explorer 1, launched on Jan. 31, 1958 ? but in addition to it being the world's first communications satellite, the project also marked the first use of a missile-guidance system to steer a satellite into orbit.
The Dec. 18, 1958 liftoff was the first successful use of Convair's Atlas intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) as a space-launch vehicle ? a rocket that would later go on to lofting the first American astronauts into orbit.
Project SCORE, as the first endeavor of the then newly-established Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), was devised in six months under complete secrecy. Only 88 people were ever aware of Project SCORE prior to its launch, and of those, 53 were purposely misled to believe the project had been canceled before its planned liftoff.
Rather than the launch vehicle deploying the satellite as a separate spacecraft, SCORE's communications package was built into the Atlas' fairing pods and the entire rocket body entered orbit. At 9,000 pounds (4080 kilograms), it was the heaviest object to circle the planet at the time.
President Eisenhower recorded his message in the White House two days before it was heard relayed from space. The audio was loaded onto a tape recorder, one of two aboard SCORE, which ground stations in the southern United States could command to play back the message.
Eisenhower's message was, "This is the President of the United States speaking. Through the marvels of scientific advance, my voice is coming to you via a satellite circling in outer space. My message is a simple one: Through this unique means I convey to you and all mankind, America's wish for peace on Earth and goodwill toward men everywhere."

The addition of Eisenhower's Project SCORE broadcast to the National Recording Registry means more than it just being added to a list of songs and spoken word titles. The 30-second space message will now be actively preserved for future generations.
The Library of Congress is identifying and preserving the best existing versions of each recording on the registry. These recordings will be housed in the Library's Packard Campus for Audio Visual Conservation in Culpeper, Va., a state-of-the-art facility that is home to more than 6 million items, including nearly 3.5 million sound recordings.
After 10 years of collaborative effort and the 2010 release of the first comprehensive study on the state of recorded-sound preservation in the United States, the Library unveiled its plan last month to save the country's endangered aural legacy. This long and short-term blueprint covers the strategies for infrastructure, preservation, access, policy, and education.
In addition to the Project SCORE audio and the recordings earlier identified, the 2012 selections for the registry also include the soundtrack to the 1977 John Travolta movie "Saturday Night Fever," the radio broadcast featuring Will Rogers' 1931 folksy insights in support of Herbert Hoover's nationwide unemployment relief campaign aired during the Great Depression, and The Ramones self-titled 1976 rock album.

Pain reliever shows anti-viral activity against flu
Mar. 21, 2013 ? The over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drug naproxen may also exhibit antiviral activity against influenza A virus, according to a team of French scientists. The finding, the result of a structure-based investigation, is published online ahead of print in the journal Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy.
New influenza vaccines must be developed annually, because the surface proteins they target mutate rapidly, the way cars used to get a whole new look every year. The researchers, led by Anny Slama-Schwok of the Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique, Jouy en Josas, France, found a much more stable, reliable target for anti-influenza activity. The so-called ribonucleoprotein complexes are necessary for replication, and the researchers realized they could target the nucleoprotein, preventing assembly of the complexes. Because of its vital function, the nucleoprotein is highly conserved, making it a good potential target for antiviral drugs.
The nucleoprotein's three dimensional structure, solved in 2006, provided the basis for searching for new drugs that could interfere with its action. The researchers did a virtual screening within the Sigma-Aldrich online catalog of biochemicals. That screening identified Naproxen, better known as the over-the-counter pain reliever Aleve, and as expected, it bound to the nucleoprotein, and impeded RNA binding, says Slama-Schwok. In further testing, it reduced the viral load in cells infected with H1N1 and H3N2 influenza A virus, and in mice it demonstrated a therapeutic index against influenza A that was superior to that of any other anti-inflammatory drug.
Specifically, naproxen blocks the RNA binding groove of the nucleoprotein, preventing formation of the ribonucleoprotein complex, thus taking the vital nucleoproteins out of circulation. The researchers write that naproxen is a lead compound for drug development that could be improved by tweaking the molecule to boost its ability to bind to nucleoprotein.
As an already approved drug, naproxen could become a treatment against influenza relatively quickly, the researchers write. Its status as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), which inhibits the COX-2 pathway, as well as an antiviral would boost its efficacy.

Now might be the time to familiarize yourself with the Power Matters Alliance (PMA). The industry's most recognizable standard, Qi, is facing serious competition from the PMA, which has garnered support from Duracell Powermat, AT&T, smartphone manufacturers such as BlackBerry and ZTE, and even Starbucks shops, which have begun rolling out its wireless charging tech in certain outlets. House Speaker John Boehner appeared on ABC's This Week to gab with guest host Martha Raddatz about his relationship with the President, the state of the Republican party,?and any other Sunday gossip they could think of. As much as Boehner appreciated the President's most recent efforts to reach out to Republicans, he said it won't do much to bridge any policy gaps between the White House and Republicans. "Well, it's always a good thing to engage in more conversation - engage more members in the conversation that - have not been involved up to this point," Boehner said. "But when you get down the bottom line, the president believes that we have to have more taxes from the American people, we're not gonna get very far." In other words: thank you for the dinner, but we're still doing to make your life miserable. "If the president doesn't believe that the goal ought to be to balance the budget over the next ten years - I don't - not sure we're gonna get very far," he continued. "And this is the whole issue.?We have a spending problem here in Washington and it's time to solve the problem." Raddatz asked Boehner whether or not he trusted the President. "Absolutely," Boehner said. "The president and I, as I have made very clear, have a very good relationship," he explained. "We're open with each other. We're honest with each other. But we're trying to bridge some big differences." But enough about the President, yeesh. Everyone always wants to talk about him.

They switched topics eventually to another hot-button issue of the day: the future of the Republican party. With the dust barely settled from the CPAC conference, Boehner fought against the idea something may be wrong with Republican party values. It's a communications issue, he contends. "The issue with our party is pretty simple. There's nothing wrong with the principles of our party," Boehner said, responding to Rand Paul calling Republican leadership "stale and moss-covered" at CPAC this week. Boehner argued Republicans needs to do a better job explaining in simple terms why their policies would help people. They need an Explainer-in-Chief, like how the Democrats have Bill Clinton. "Why balancing the budget, as an example, would be good for American families," Boehner said. "We've gotta do a better job of helping people understand what our principles are in terms that they deal with every day."

They also touched on Rob Portman's recent coming out as a gay marriage supporter. Portman was the first Republican senator to do so. Boehner doesn't see his stance on the issue changing any time soon, if ever. "Rob's a great friend and a long-time ally. And I appreciate that he's decided to change his views on this. But I believe that marriage is a union of a man and a woman," Boehner told Raddatz. Portman apparently called Boehner to discuss his new stance. "Listen, I believe that marriage is the union of one man and one woman. It's what I grew up with. It's what I believe. It's what my church teaches me," Boehner said. "And I can't imagine that position would ever change."

Paul Ryan?still thinks his budget is a good idea. Ryan had to defend his budget during an appearance on CBS'?Face the Nation?on Sunday morning. According to Ryan, his budget that cuts Obamacare is "what people want." It's a "vision document," Ryan said. "It is what we think is the right way to go."?Nation?host Bob Scheiffer asked whether or not he trusts Obama -- the same way Boehner was asked the same thing on?This Week.?Ryan was nowhere near as definitive as the Speaker. "I subscribe to the Reagan school of thought, which is trust but verify,"?Ryan said. "The so-called charm offensive, I think it?s a good thing."

Republican Sen. Bob Corker and Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin made some baby step progress towards economic reform during Fox News Sunday's panel discussion Sunday morning. Corker left the door open for a deal that may appeal both sides -- rather than shutting everything down like most usually do -- and earned praise from Durbin for being willing to negotiate. "I think there, by the way, is a chance on a deal. I know the president is saying the right things and we have an opportunity over the next four months," Corker said, before laying out what a successful deal might look like. "I think Republicans, if [Democrats] say true entitlement reform, would be glad to look at tax reform that generates additional revenues. And that doesn?t mean increasing rates, it means closing loopholes, and that also means arranging our tax system so that we have economic growth, and I think we have been saying that since day one," Corker said. Durbin thanked Corker for his "honest and constructive answer." "What Bob Corker just said from his side is a basis set of principles that both parties can rally around," Durbin said.
Corker also praised the Obama administration's decision to increase the number of missile interceptors along the country's west coast to address any growing concern over a North Korean attack on Fox News Sunday. But while Corker "applauds the efforts," he thinks more still needs to be done. "I do hope we?ll focus on a base on the eastern side with radar facilities, and I think the question is, Chris, how does the nondeployment of the fourth phase of our European base system affect us over time? So there?s some technical issues that we?re going to be getting into this week with the Pentagon and State Department," Corker said. Not that he thinks the country is in any real danger. "I don?t think that threat is imminent ? I don?t think they have the delivery mechanisms that are necessary to really harm us. But I think it?s really good that we?re taking those precautionary measures to make sure they cannot do damage, I think it puts us in ? a different place as it relates to negotiating with them and at the end of the day," Corker said.
Also on FNS, Durbin urged his fellow Senators to pass a continuing spending resolution this week so the government won't shut down after Easter weekend. If they don't then the next available opportunity won't be until after a scheduled two-week recess. Durbin said there were too many amendments added to the bill -- the number was almost at 100, he said -- that were threatening to slow the process down. Some weren't even related to budget issues. "This is all very important, I understand, but we have work to be done in just a short period of time. I urge my Senate colleagues: let?s be sparing in the amendments. Let?s get the CR passed," Durbin said. "We can do it; we can do it quickly this coming week." Durbin didn't go into specifics when asked if the Senate's resolution will clash with the House budget that preserved the sequester cuts. "We have put together a CR that is acceptable in its dollar terms to the House of Representatives," he said, "and I think we can agree on what that will be."
Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus announced a new $10 million initiative as part of the Growth and Opportunity Project?that will send "hundreds" of Republicans operatives to communities across the country during his appearance on?Face the Nation.?"Our party's had a real quality of context problem," Priebus said. "We have become a party that parachutes into communities four months before an election and while that?s how we?ve operated for years and years... in comparison to the other side, the Obama campaign lived in these communities for years. The relationships were deep." The Republican committee will send their workers to communities across the U.S., with a focus on minority communities, to help familiarize constituents with the party. The workers will be "a part of the community on an ongoing basis, paid for by the RNC to make the case for our party and our candidates," Priebus explained. The new initiative will hopefully help prevent things like Todd Akin's comments from ever happening again, or at least help the party recover from gaffes like that, Priebus said. "If you're not talking to people, and the level of familiarity isn?t there, then silly things like Todd Akin and some of the goofy things that were said ... there's no relationship to explain anything," he said. Priebus said the new project is "unprecedented, but it's something we had to do." He also said the Republican party has to shorten the turnaround time for churning out new candidates. He called for an earlier party convention, fewer primary debates and a shorter primary calendar in the next election. "I believe that our primary process was way too long, I think our calendar needs to be looked at, our debate calendar needs to be looked at," he said. He thinks the party should have the convention in June or July, instead of closer to the end of August, to allow the candidate to use party funds earlier. Romney was "a sitting duck for two months," Priebus said. His math was a little off for his debate suggestions, but he got the message across. "I don?t know, maybe seven or eight but not 23," he said. "That's ridiculous."
Karl Rove responded to shots fired at him from Sarah Palin during her Saturday CPAC appearance while the American Crossroads chief was on Fox News Sunday. "If she can play in primaries, other people can play in primaries," Rove said. Palin indirectly referenced Rove when she said "the architects" from Washington should stop vetting Republican candidates. "First of all, I live in Texas, I don?t live in Washington," Roce said Sunday. "Second of all, look, Sarah Palin should be agreeing with us. She didn?t support Todd Akin, and when he said the reprehensible things he said, she wisely came out and said he ought to get out of the race." Rove fired a shot back at Palin, though, saying he's a particularly terrible candidate -- "sort of a balding, fat guy" -- but that if he ever was in office he would never "leave office mid-term."
