Baseball: ThunderBolts light up for 5-2 win over Gateway Grizzlies

Updated: July 24, 2013 8:49PM

After scoring just once in the first two games of their series vs. the Gateway Grizzlies, the Windy City ThunderBolts were in dire need of some offensive production Wednesday.

The T-Bolts mixed that sense of desperation with a heavy dose of aggression. They stole four bases in the first three innings, while stretching singles into doubles and doubles into triples to put up five runs in the first four innings.

Combine that with another terrific start from Dyllon Nuernberg and Windy City salvaged the final game of the series with a 5-2 victory at Standard Bank Stadium in Crestwood.

?We?ve talked a lot about what we want our team to be,? the T-Bolts? Andrew Brauer said. ?We want our identity to be scrappers. We want to bunt, take extra bases and do anything we can to manufacture runs.?

The fans in attendance for ?Splash Day? were not only treated to a win from Windy City (24-34), but also were witness to a surprise appearance by the Stanley Cup.

After an event at the adjacent Caesar Park, the Cup was brought to Standard Bank Stadium and paraded around the field after the game?s final out.

That was a thrill for Brauer, a Mokena resident.

?It was very cool,? he said. ?I followed (the Blackhawks) when they won it last time (in 2010) but never got a chance to see the Cup. Getting to see it here was a moment I?ll never forget.?

The T-Bolts broke through in a big way early, scoring three times in the first. After Mike Torres walked and stole second, Ryan Soares drove him in with a double down the left-field line. Chad Cregar singled in Soares.

Cregar stole second and took third on an errant throw before scoring on Zach Aakhus? sacrifice fly.

?We?ve been struggling to produce runs ... we?re going to do whatever it takes to score,? Soares said. ?We were aggressive and we knew if we could get Dyllon some early runs, we?d be in good shape.?

Nuernberg (6-1) was unusually wild, walking six, but he held the hard-hitting Grizzlies (35-22) in check, limiting them to one run on two hits in seven innings. He struck out nine and lowered his ERA to 2.33.

?My command wasn?t there like usual, but once I got in the stretch I was like, ?I?m going to throw strikes, and they?re going to have to get three straight singles off me to score,? ? he said. ?There?s nothing like going out for the second up 3-0 already. We had all the momentum.?

The T-Bolts went up 4-0 ? their biggest lead since July 9 ? on an RBI single by Kyle Robinson (2-for-4) in the third. Torres singled home Brauer (2-for-3) in the fourth.

The Grizzlies scored single runs in the seventh and eighth, but Michael Click shut them down in the ninth for his 13th save.

Manufacturing slips in May, tempers signs of recovery

By William Schomberg and David Milliken

LONDON (Reuters) - British manufacturing contracted in May at its fastest pace since January, tempering signs that the economy is picking up speed.

Overall industrial output was also weaker than expected as it came in unchanged from April, and the country's trade deficit worsened in May to hit its highest level in six months.

"It's just a reminder that while the UK economic figures are looking better, the economy isn't out of the woods yet," said Philip Shaw, an economist at Investec in London, referring to the production figures.

Sterling fell to a near four-month low against the euro and gilts rallied after the data, which represented a break from a string of economic indicators that have beaten forecasts in recent weeks.

The Bank of England announced no new bond-buying stimulus last week after the first policy meeting chaired by new governor Mark Carney, but the central bank surprised markets by warning against premature expectations of an interest rate increase.

Manufacturing shrank by 0.8 percent, much weaker than forecasts for a 0.3 percent rise in a Reuters poll and was down 2.9 percent compared with May 2012, when there was one less public holiday than in May 2013.

Output in the industrial sector - which makes up about 15 percent of Britain's economy - was flat compared with April, falling short of forecasts for a 0.2 percent rise, the Office for National Statistics said.

The overall industrial output figure was supported by a 4.9 percent rise in oil and gas output, the biggest jump in six months after some maintenance projects were completed.

Some economists said they were surprised by the weak manufacturing data, which came a week after a survey of purchasing managers found the sector had its best growth in more than two years in June. That is a month later than the period covered by Tuesday's release.

"Today's figures feel a little out of kilter with other industry data and what our manufacturing clients are telling us," said Mike Rigby, who manages Barclays' banking relationships with manufacturers.

"Our clients suggest they have increased visibility of their forward order book which is having a positive effect on their appetite to invest. To many it feels like we are experiencing a more positive outlook," he added.

Three surveys published earlier on Tuesday showed rising house prices, improved business confidence and steady growth in retail sales.

The ONS said that on an annual basis, industrial output was down 2.3 percent, compared to forecasts for a 1.5 percent drop.

In the three months to May, output in the industrial sector was up 0.3 percent.

The ONS also said Britain's goods trade deficit grew to 8.491 billion pounds ($12.68 billion) from 8.430 billion pounds in April. Economists had forecast a gap of 8.47 billion pounds.

Including Britain's surplus in trade in services, the overall trade deficit widened to 2.435 billion pounds.

The monthly figures tend to be volatile, but over the three months to May, total exports were up 1.9 percent and imports grew 2.3 percent. ($1 = 0.6695 British pounds)

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT: WOMEN IN FILM : Wiles Magazine

Posted by Wiles Magazine on Wednesday, July 10, 2013 ? Leave a Comment?

By Drew Dorsey

During the month of July, Wiles Magazine revels in a month-long celebration of??independent thinkers, voices and expression. What better way to celebrate independent expression than with independent films???But what exactly are?independent films??

Filmmaking pioneer Mary Pickford

Independent films are typically created outside the major film studio structure. They tend to have a more limited release than mainstream films ? with a select few having the privilege of premiering at independent film festivals.? However, despite the level of creativity and engaging storytelling that?are typically characteristic of?indie films,?many never see the light of day due to a lack of resources and opportunity. Thanks to events such as the Independent Film Series put on by the?prestigious Women In Film organization, select films get the chance to be seen by audiences.

Women In Film.

With forty-eight chapters globally, Women in Film is an organization that promotes and supports women in the entertainment industry. By funding programs that provide internships and scholarships, WIF?s efforts foster both educational and professional opportunities. In addition, WIF supports women actively working?in the industry by celebrating their work and inspiring a sense of community among peers. The Women In Film organization produces?several events annually and throughout the year, including?the Crystal and Lucy Awards, Entertainment Forum.? WIF also?produces PSAs that shine a light on issues that are specific and relevant to the female community.

?

Independent Film Series.

Conceived by Women in Film?s Senior Consultant of Membership, Candace Bowen, the Independent Film Series debuted over a decade ago as an event?designed to service, retain and recruit membership for the WIF. Bowen wanted to create an outlet for filmmakers to gain exposure and share their projects with WIF members and ultimately major distributors.?Once a month, the Independent Film Series allows indie filmmakers to share their films and network with other members through screenings, receptions and Q & A sessions. The series is open to all WIF members and provides filmmakers with an outlet to showcase their work free of charge.

Films are screened once a month and rotate between documentaries, features and shorts. The IFS does not promise filmmakers in hopes that their films will be picked up by major production companies, but, rather,?provides filmmakers with a foundation to screen their films and gain exposure.?

Legacy

Many films that have been screened through WIF have gone on to enjoy major success. Documentaries such as Freeheld and The Magic of Fellini have gone on to gain attention from none other than Oscar himself at the Academy Awards. Founder of the IFS, Candace Bowen makes an excellent point in saying:

?Why rely on the gatekeeper? It is just someone?s opinion. I want to be able to put my stamp on a project as it makes its journey. Don?t get angry because someone says no, get smart. Why wait for the stamp of approval? Control the space you stand on.?

As Bowen noted, the business of making independent films is no cakewalk. While the organization provides a solid foundation, perseverance, she told us, is the real key to success is cinema.

??Consistency and hard work, but as an independent filmmaker it is never ?work? its fun! Nothing comes to a sleepy head but a dream and if you?re lazy that?s what?s going to happen.?

HTC One Mini, One Max outed in O2 Germany docs

HTC One

Black and silver color options listed for the Mini in latest leak

It's becoming more and more likely that the HTC One line will soon be expanded with the addition of big and small-screened versions of the current HTC flagship. New info has come to light this morning from O2 Germany documents leaked by Mobiflip, which appear to corroborate the names "HTC One Mini" and "HTC One Max" for the new devices. The Mini — formerly known by its codename "M4" — is expected to use a smaller 4.3-inch display, while the Max — or "T6" — is said to be a 6-incher. The Max is listed in silver, while the Mini is shown as available in black and silver.

Rumored specs for the HTC One Mini include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 CPU, a 720p display resolution and "Ultrapixel" rear camera. Sources have recently told Android Central that the One Mini will be making an appearance in early August, and that the 6-inch One Max should pack a 1080p display and use Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 800 CPU.

BBC to broadcast Wimbledon final and semi-final matches in 3D

Image

Though ESPN 3D's imminent demise might be evidence to some that 3D TV isn't exactly killing it, BBC has confirmed that it will cover Wimbledon again this year with that extra dimension. In particular, it will broadcast selected matches, including the men's and women's finals and semi-finals, in free-to-air 3D for those with the Red Button service and supported sets. Wimbledon marked its first-ever 3D broadcast two years ago, and the BBC is also experimenting with 4K coverage this year with Sony, albeit exclusively at a live spectator "experience zone" on the finely manicured grounds. The network also said it would up its live streams from six to ten to go with its YouTube coverage -- meaning UKers who miss a single grunt will have only themselves to blame.

Whither Snowden? NSA whistleblower skips Moscow-Havana flight

Edward Snowden's decision to miss his flight to Cuba ? and apparently stay in Russia, at least for the moment ? may lead the US to push harder on the Kremlin to turn him over.

By Fred Weir,?Correspondent / June 24, 2013

A passenger checks his phone in front of an Aeroflot passenger plane due to depart to Cuba, parked at a terminal of Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport today. Edward Snowden was booked for the flight, but did not board the plane ? leading to new speculation about his location and plans.

Fleeing National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden pulled a vanishing act in Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport Monday by failing to show up for an Aeroflot flight to Havana that he was booked on ? sending a planeload of frustrated Moscow-based journalists off for an unplanned vacation in Cuba.

Aeroflot, Russia's national airline,?had confirmed Monday that Mr. Snowden was booked to fly to Cuba on a regular flight leaving Monday afternoon. But as the plane's doors closed and he was still a no-show, reporters for major news outlets who'd scrambled to buy tickets for the flight in hopes of talking with the elusive whistleblower tweeted photos of his empty seat and resigned themselves to ?an unwanted twelve-and-a-half hour flight.

Russian news services had reported that Snowden arrived in Moscow Sunday aboard an Aeroflot flight from Hong Kong. An unidentified Aeroflot source told journalists that he and his companion, WikiLeaks official Sarah Harrison, spent the night in the "capsule" hotel Vozdushni Express inside Sheremetyevo's transit area. Reporters saw the ambassador of Ecuador, the country to which Snowden has applied for asylum, arrive and go inside the transit zone. But there have been no independently confirmed sightings of Snowden himself.

Though Snowden himself remains invisible, Ecuador's foreign minister, Ricardo Pati?o Aroca, read out a statement from him ? reported by the Guardian ? in which he compares himself with Bradley Manning, the former US army private currently on trial for handing hundreds of thousands of classified US documents to WikiLeaks.

"Manning has been subjected to cruel and inhuman treatment. The trial of Bradley Manning is taking place now and secret witnesses have been summoned to court and secret documents have been submitted," Snowden is quoted as saying in defense of his decision to seek asylum in Ecuador.

"I think that because of the circumstances it is unlikely that I will have a fair trial or humane treatment before trial, and also I have the risk of life imprisonment or death," he added.

The apparent news that Snowden might still be in Russia could energize efforts by Washington to convince Russia to give him over, despite the fact that Russia and the US have no mutual extradition treaty.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, in several statements to the Russian media, has insisted that President Vladimir Putin has no knowledge of Snowden's whereabouts or interest in his itinerary. "Overall, we have no information about [Snowden]," he told the independent Interfax agency Monday.

Overnight, the US appealed urgently to Russia to see Snowden as an acid test of partnership and the security cooperation Moscow has been hoping to get from the US in advance of the upcoming Sochi Winter Games.

"Given our intensified cooperation after the Boston marathon bombings and our history of working with Russia on law enforcement matters ? including returning numerous high-level criminals back to Russia at the request of the Russian government ? we expect the Russian government to look at all options available to expel Mr. Snowden back to the U.S. to face justice for the crimes with which he is charged," US National Security Council Spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said in a statement.

Speaking to journalists during a visit to New Delhi Monday, US Secretary of State John Kerry suggested that the episode is likely to damage US relations with both Russia and China if they should prove to have been officially involved in his flight.

"It would be deeply troubling, obviously, if they [Russia and China] had adequate notice, and notwithstanding that, they make the decision willfully to ignore that and not live by the standards of the law," news agencies quoted Mr. Kerry as saying.

"As a result there would be without any question some effect and impact on the relationship and consequences," he said.

Russian experts say it's highly unlikely that Snowden boarded an Aeroflot plane, without a valid US passport, and flew to Moscow without at least the acquiescence of the Kremlin.

"I'm pretty sure this could not have taken place without some level of involvement on the part of Russian and Chinese authorities," says Fyodor Lukyanov, editor of Russia in Global Affairs, a leading Moscow-based foreign policy journal.

"Russia can resist pressure, and that's why he's here in safety. ?But I don't think Russia wants to keep him, even if [the Kremlin] has suggested that it would be open to that. It's one thing to show that we can't be pushed around, and quite another to have this as a permanent headache in our relations with the US," he says.

Alexei Pushkov, the chair of the State Duma's international affairs committee, told journalists Monday that the US should stop posing as the offended party, in light of the recent "red-handed" capture of an alleged CIA agent in downtown Moscow and disclosures by Snowden that the NSA and its British counterpart tried to listen to former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's phone calls during a G-20 summit in London in 2009.

"I think we should be guided by our own understanding of what we should do. We do not see any special restraint on the part of U.S. special services with regards to Russia," Mr. Pushkov told Interfax.

"If Snowden were the only problem upsetting perfect relations between Russia and the US, that would be one thing," says Alexei Makarkin, director of the independent Center for Political Technologies in Moscow.

"But as things stand now, we have different positions on all the key issues of world politics. Russia is extremely disenchanted with the US and given up all hopes of building normal relations with it. So, why would Russia trouble itself over threats that this Snowden case might worsen our ties with Washington?" he adds.

Samsung ships 20 million Galaxy S4s

Galaxy S4

Two months on, Samsung's shifted 20 million devices worldwide

Samsung has shifted 20 million Galaxy S4 smartphones in the just over two months since the device first went on sale, company co-CEO JK Shin has told the Korean press. To put that in perspective, the first month of availability for the S4 yielded 10 million shipments, while last year's Galaxy S3 took 100 days to reach the 20 million milestone.

Of course, shipping a phone isn't the same as selling it to an end-user. However shipped devices have to go somewhere, and the number shows that Samsung's partners at the very least are keen to snap up the device.

Samsung also reported Galaxy S4 sales of 500,000 in its domestic market of South Korea.

Microsoft ties Bing Ads into Windows 8.1 Smart Search

Microsoft

With Windows 8.1, Microsoft made a significant change to the way users search: it unified the experience to include web, cloud, app and system results. Now, the company's putting something else into Smart Search: Bing Ads. It's okay if this strikes you as a bit troubling -- most users are accustomed to seeing ads display within browser-based search, not OS-driven queries. But that's the new face of Win 8.1, like it or not. So the next time you use that convenient all-in-one search sidebar, expect to see sponsored results like the one above appropriately highlighted and packed with site previews, links, addresses and phone numbers. Basically, it's no different than what you're getting from a regular Bing search, only now it's baked into your live-tiled OS. You can thank Microsoft in the comments below.

Trampoline Sheets Enhance What Beds Are Really For

Through the eyes of an adult, a bed is a spot to rest, a refuge for sleep, and a place to recharge before work the next day. But to a kid, a bed really only has one useful purpose: as a trampoline. And since jumping on the bed is rarely allowed, Snurk made this wonderful matching duvet and pillowcase set that turns any mattress into a bouncy playground.
