Eating Disorder Treatment Success ? Joerg Article Directory

Eating disorder treatment patients may have panic, anxiety, or lack of concentration which could lead to other things such as abuse of substances or even suicidal thoughts. These feelings of discomfort sometimes lead patients to ?drop-out? of treatment.

Treatment for an eating disorder can be a very big step for people who don?t understand the illness or even that an eating disorder can be treated. Many times people with anorexia or bulimia will simply feel like their eating disorder is a way for them to maintain control over themselves and their lives with a focus on being thin. Some have a distorted body image which causes them to have negative views of their body, and their selves. Eating disorders are ego-syntonic, which means that people with eating disorders don?t always recognize the symptoms as problematic. Eating disorders may be accompanied by other mental health issues as well which makes diagnosis a critical cog in helping to battle these life stealing disorders. Signs that treatment will work for an individual may include:

Acceptance of the problem

Eating disorder treatment patients may have panic, anxiety, or lack of concentration which could lead to other things such as abuse of substances or even suicidal thoughts. These feelings of discomfort sometimes lead patients to ?drop-out? of treatment. This is particularly prevalent in patients with Anorexia Nervosa. While people with binge eating disorder or bulimia nervosa are not quite as commonly plagued with this difficulty in acceptance, this phase is generally considered the foundation of recovery because unless the patient recognizes the problem in the thought process and/or the body image, the therapists have nothing to treat.

Treatment programming methods

Eating Disorder Treatment has several variations and styles. In fact this aspect of treatment is one area which seems to constantly be in a state of change, by definition the word programming means ?A set of methods and techniques that work with the non-conscious parts of the brain to re-pattern the thoughts, behaviors and beliefs that are limiting an individual.? There are many different methods which are regarded as successful, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, and FBT or Maudsley Approach, an approach based on the entire family, may work for any individual, and may not work for some. These methods are not 100% accepted in the field of eating disorder treatment by any means, however, most behavioral specialists, and psychologists can and do understand each method and how they relate to each particular patient. Important to the treatment is rapport with the patient, and also the participation of the patient in the therapy itself. Rapport with the patient can help break down the walls of defense often built up by confrontation about the disorders from members of the patient?s friend circles and/or family. Stating things in the positive is also a common thread because it proves positive things are going on, and positive outcomes can actually happen.

What patients have to know to get the most from eating disorder treatment.

If patients have responded well to the method of treatment and have gained weight and understand their body image and what that means they are typically on a positive path toward complete recovery. Typically for a long term recovery patients need to be able to trust themselves and learn how to listen to their body and their feelings. The human body is amazing in its ability to tell us not only that something is wrong, but also hint at solutions. Patients well on the road to recovery will also learn to accept themselves for who/what they are and also learn to love that self again. Learning and embracing change in ones habits and behaviors is truly only a small part of recovery while understanding that this change has to be permanent that allows for habits to be re-learned, which happens in every success story.
