TUESDAY, Sept. 27 (HealthDay News) -- The number of Americans who say they suffer from mental health disabilities has jumped significantly over the past decade, a new study shows.
Researchers from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health found the prevalence of self-reported mental health disability rose from 2 percent between 1997 and 1999 to 2.7 percent between 2007 and 2009. The increase amounts to nearly 2 million disabled adults, the study noted.
"These findings highlight the need for improved access to mental health services in our communities and for better integration of these services with primary care delivery," said Dr. Ramin Mojtabai, an associate professor at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, in a university news release. "While the trend in self-reported mental health disability is clear, the causes of this trend are not well understood."
In conducting the study, researchers examined information collected in the U.S. National Health Interview Survey involving 312,364 adults ranging in age from 18 to 64.
The increase in adults reporting mental health disabilities was mainly among people with significant psychological distress who did not seek out mental health services in the past year and in people who also reported disabilities related to other chronic conditions, the study noted.
Financial hardship may be to blame for lack of treatment. The number of people who did not receive mental health care due to financial reasons increased from 2 percent between 1997 and 1999 to 3.2 percent 10 years later, the researchers said.
The study was reported online Sept. 22 ahead of print publication in the American Journal of Public Health.
Fewer adults reported disability related to other chronic conditions than 10 years earlier, while roughly the same number experienced significant psychological distress at the start and end of the decade.

SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) ? The U.S. economy is on a "knife edge" between growth and contraction, and if it were a dashboard, it would be flashing "watch out, danger ahead on all gauges," Dallas Federal Reserve Bank's top economist said on Tuesday.
"The economy is moving along at stall speed," Dallas Fed research director Harvey Rosenblum told a forum sponsored by the greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce. "Unless we start moving a little bit faster, we are at a tipping point where things may not go the right way."
The U.S. jobs engine has lost momentum and could be set for further "backtracking," Meanwhile, he said, there is also a "credible" risk of rising inflation.
"We are in the midst of the Second Great Contraction," Rosenblum said, demonstrating the economy's predicament with a picture of a place on the Appalachian Trail known as "Knife's Edge."
"This patient is still not ready to get out of the hospital, there are still tubes connected to the patient, and the patient is still not responding well to all the medicine."
The grim assessment of the economic outlook came a week after a majority of the Fed's policy-setting panel backed further monetary policy easing to help support a faltering U.S. recovery.
Dallas Fed President Richard Fisher, Rosenblum's boss, was one of three policymakers to dissent. Fisher gave a vigorous defense of his decision at his bank headquarters on Tuesday, saying he believed the move could do more harm than good.
In San Antonio, Rosenblum said that there is a better than even chance the United States will return to more than 2 percent growth, rather than fall into recession.
But at the recent policy-setting Federal Open Market Committee meeting, given a choice between whether the economy will be better than expected or worse than expected in the near future, most participants said it would be worse than expected, according to Rosenblum.
"The takeaway on the national economy is that economic growth has slowed and maybe stalled," he said. "We are on an edge."

Did you know I try to do something scary every day?
Some days it?s something simple like reaching out to someone by email. Sometimes I send off a guest post I?ve poured my heart into. Now and then I just going surfing.
There are plenty of things that scare me. The lovely Jen Gresham at Everyday Bright interviewed me about this strange practice so you can read more about why I do it here.
Now the more scary things I do, the scarier the things I do keep getting.
You see I?m running out of scary things to do, so now I have to do the things I?ve been putting off longest. The things that scare me most of all.
So in March I joined Toastmasters to improve my public speaking.
Why Public Speaking Scares Me
I was a teacher for many years so I used to be at ease standing up front talking to people.
This year I?ve been doing a lot of talks and workshops about blogging and I feel comfortable with that. It?s okay teaching and talking to people about topics I know well but talking about myself is terrifying.
If you thought writing and sharing your personal writing on your blog was hard, then try talking about them to a room full of expectant strangers.
I also have a problem with putting my body on display.
I can talk away happily when sitting down. Standing behind the safety of a lectern is great. But I hate standing in front of people with nothing to hide behind.
I feel awkward. I don?t know what to do with my hands. I remember how I got teased at school for being a skinny giraffe.
Writing it down sounds ridiculous. Just as I can?t understand people who fear flying because it doesn?t bother me, so you may not be able to relate to this awkward body image thing of mine.
But it?s a deep-seated problem and to be honest joining Toastmasters (a group to help improve public speaking) has made it worse.
I never realized how scary it would be until I actually tried it.
I?ve given six speeches to my fellow Toastmasters on various topics but what bothers me is, unlike the people who?ve paid to learn from me, all they probably want to do is practice their own public speaking skills. Not listen to me. So I feel bad for boring them.
But deep down I know my speeches aren?t boring. I spend days writing them then many long hours practicing and memorizing them.
As with anything I?m a perfectionist.
I want my speeches to be better than anything Martin Luther King ever uttered. No wonder I get scared with the bar set that high.
Most times when I finish my speech at Toastmasters I want to run to the toilets and cry. Sometimes I do that.
But when I did my sixth speech there was a watershed moment. Afterwards I thought my speech was actually okay.
I know I shouldn?t feel so scared of speaking and I know the only way to kill my fear is to keep doing what scares me until I?m not ruled by that fear any more.
So that?s why I keep doing scary things every day and why I persevere with the things that scare me most.
Why Pitching a Travel Book Terrifies Me
Since my fear of public speaking is so out of proportion I decided it needs serious treatment. Instead of quitting like I so badly want to, I decided to participate in a live blog pitch for my book The Naked Travel Stories.
It?s doubly scary because I have to talk and, worse still, talk about my book The Naked Travel Stories which I?m terrified might not be good enough.
I haven?t even written the book yet and fear is probably why. I know procrastination for writers is driven by fear. It?s driven by the fear that our writing won?t be good enough.
I suffered rejection and it sucks but I know we can bounce back from rejection. I?ve done it.
Why I Pitched My Travel Book Anyway
So I signed up to pitch my book The Naked Travel Stories live in front of a publisher, an author and an audience of 60 other writers at a literary festival.
Here?s the video of the book pitch made about an hour before the pitch by Lake MacDonald in the Noosa hinterland. Can you tell how scared I am?
Now I?m ratcheting the fear up more by sharing this video with you. Because if speaking live in public is hard, being videoed has to be the worst.
Sharing the video on YouTube where who knows who might watch it strikes fear into my heart.
But hey, what?s the worst thing that can happen? Not much. It?s not exactly life-threatening is it?
That?s the thing about fear. It?s irrational, it?s cowardly, it?s idiotic. Worst of all fear robs us of living our dreams.
So we have to face those fears. They may seem real to us but really, they?re as fictitious as Hannibal Lecter himself.
I hope you?ll take courage from my exercise in conquering fear and do something scary too.

Non-Fiction Book Pitch Transcript: The Naked Travel Stories by Annabel Candy
Here?s the full transcript. I divided my pitch into three parts: Who would read the book, what it?s about and why I?m the best woman to write it.
The Naked Travel Stories fill the gap between who we once when we were children and young adults and who we are now.
They?re written for women aged 35 and older to explore the conflict between our childhood dreams and our parents? dreams for us. Between the desire to follow those youthful dreams versus the instinct to play it safe and follow the beaten track. The desire to travel and have fun versus society?s expectation for us to settle down, have children and get a proper job.
The Naked Travel Stories cover the first ten years of my adult life when I was traveling the world, not just exploring the globe, but also exploring who I was, what my potential was and what I would become.
When I left school I knew I wanted to be a writer, in fact I?d known that since I first started school, but writing wasn?t a career or a lifestyle choice my parents supported.
So instead of following my dream I got two degrees, lived in eight different countries and traveled to more than 40 counties before finally coming to terms with who I am today ? a mother, a wife and, at last, a writer.
But during those 10 years when I was traveling I experienced things which are at odds with the respectable business woman and mother you see before you.
The English private school girl, wearer of white gloves and a straw boater, nicknamed Baby Doll by her English teacher Mr. ?Don?t Mention His Grandfather? Tolkien, has had a few adventures.
I?ve experienced sleep paralysis in Greece and, convinced there was a strange man in my room run outside naked, calling out to some nearby men for help then quickly switching from fear to confusion then tears when we discovered the intruder was nothing more than a figment of my imagination.
I?ve slept free in Germany during the Oktober Fest in Munich when beds are booked months in advance, wrapping myself in kitchen towels to survive the cold nights.
I?ve hitch-hiked extensively and traveled by donkey cart in Tunisia, Porsche in Germany, gravel truck in Zimbabwe and fire truck in Turkey. Palms slippery with sweat, hanging on grimly to the metal pole at the back as the truck careened round corners up a steep mountain pass with Turkish firefighters laughing merrily at me in the rear view mirror from the safety of the cab.
So how do we fill that gap between who we were, what we?ve done and what we?ve become?
It?s been a long, rocky journey. Sometimes funny, occasionally angst-ridden, at times plagued by depression but always in motion.
And over time I?ve learned to reconcile the little girl who wanted to be a writer with the hippy chick who traveled the world and unite them as happy room mates in this middle-aged body. They still have the odd skirmish but on the whole those three parts of me have learnt to get along.
Finally I?ve given myself permission to be the writer I was meant to be and accept that, while I might look like your average middle-aged mother, I?m not, and I never will be.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? As many as 14 people have died from possible listeria illnesses traced to Colorado cantaloupes, health officials say ? a death toll that would make the food outbreak the deadliest in more than a decade.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said last week that 55 illnesses and eight deaths were linked to the outbreak. Since then, state and local health departments in Kansas, Nebraska, Texas and Wyoming have reported six additional deaths that may be linked to the tainted fruit.
Nine people died in an outbreak linked to salmonella-tainted peanuts almost three years ago. Deaths linked to the cantaloupes are expected to easily surpass that number.
Listeria is more deadly than more well-known pathogens like salmonella and E. coli, though those outbreaks generally cause many more illnesses. Twenty-one people died in an outbreak of listeria poisoning in 1998 traced to contaminated hot dogs and possibly deli meats made by Bil Mar Foods, a subsidiary of Sara Lee Corp. Another large listeria outbreak in 1985 killed 52 people and was linked to Mexican-style soft cheese.
Listeria generally only sickens the elderly, pregnant women and others with compromised immune systems. The CDC said last week that the median age of those sickened was 78.
Dr. Robert Tauxe of the CDC says the number of illnesses and deaths will probably grow in coming weeks because the symptoms of listeria don't always show up right away. It can take four weeks or more for a person to fall ill after eating food contaminated with listeria.
"That long incubation period is a real problem," Tauxe said. "People who ate a contaminated food two weeks ago or even a week ago could still be falling sick weeks later."
On Sept. 21 the CDC reported illnesses in California, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming. The agency said then that four had died in New Mexico, two had died in Colorado and one person had died in both Oklahoma and Maryland.
In the last week, state and local health departments have reported higher numbers. Officials in Texas said two deaths are linked to the outbreak and officials in Nebraska said one death there is linked to the outbreak. Officials in Kansas and Wyoming said they are investigating three additional listeria deaths that may be linked as well. The CDC has not confirmed those numbers.
Missouri and Florida have also reported new illnesses linked to the cantaloupes.
The outbreak has been traced to Jensen Farms in Holly, Colo., which recalled the tainted cantaloupes earlier this month. The Food and Drug Administration said last week that it had found listeria in samples of Jensen Farms' cantaloupes taken from a Denver-area store and on samples taken from equipment and cantaloupes at the farm's packing facility. Tests confirmed that the samples matched strains of the disease found in those sickened.
The FDA has not released any additional details from its investigation into what caused the illnesses.
The Rocky Ford-brand cantaloupes from Jensen Farms were shipped from July 29 through Sept. 10 to Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Wyoming.
The recalled cantaloupe may be labeled "Colorado Grown," ''Distributed by Frontera Produce," ''Jensenfarms.com" or "Sweet Rocky Fords." Not all of the recalled cantaloupes are labeled with a sticker, the FDA said.
Unlike many pathogens, listeria bacteria can grow at room temperatures and even refrigerator temperatures. The FDA and CDC recommend anyone who may have one of the contaminated cantaloupes throw it out immediately.
Consumer health advocates say those who think they may have had the tainted fruit in their kitchen should go a step farther. Caroline Smith DeWaal of the advocacy group Center for Science in the Public Interest says people should clean and sanitize any surfaces that the cantaloupe may have touched.
"Listeria is an environmental contaminant and it is very hardy," DeWaal said.
About 800 cases of listeria are found in the United States each year, according to CDC, and there usually are three or four outbreaks. Most of these are traced to deli meat and soft cheeses, where listeria is most common.
Produce has rarely been the culprit, but federal investigators say they have seen more produce-related listeria illnesses in the past two years. It was found in sprouts in 2009 and celery in 2010.
While most healthy adults can consume listeria with no ill effects, it can kill the elderly and those with compromised immune systems. It is also dangerous to pregnant women because it easily passes through to the fetus. Dr. Tauxe of the CDC said the type of listeria linked to the cantaloupes is not one that is commonly associated with pregnancy-associated illnesses, however. State and federal health authorities have not definitively linked any miscarriages, stillbirths or infant illnesses to the current outbreak.
Symptoms of listeria include fever and muscle aches, often with other gastrointestinal symptoms. Victims often become incapacitated and unable to speak.
Debbie Frederick said her mother knew something was wrong when her father, 87-year-old William Thomas Beach, collapsed at his home in Mustang, Okla. and couldn't get up. He died a few days later, on Sept. 1. The family later learned his death was linked to eating the cantaloupe and sued Jensen Farms.
"First you just kind of go into shock," said Frederick. "Then it settles in that he would still be alive if this hadn't happened. It's a life, for what?"

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) ? One of two police officers charged with killing a mentally ill, homeless man pleaded not guilty Monday to second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter.
Lawyers for Fullerton Officer Manuel Ramos, 37, argued for reduction of his $1 million bail, saying Ramos feared for his life in jail. A judge denied the motion.
Ramos, a 10-year veteran, and Fullerton police Cpl. Jay Cicinelli, 39, were charged last week with killing Kelly Thomas, 37, during a violent arrest at the Fullerton Transportation Center on July 5.
Officers were responding to a report of possible vehicle burglaries at the site.
Ramos entered the plea in Orange County Superior Court before Judge Erick Larsh.
Cicinelli, a 12-year veteran, pleaded not guilty Friday to one count each of involuntary manslaughter and excessive use of force. He was released on $25,000 bail.
Prosecutors said Thomas was shocked four times with a Taser stun gun, kneed in the head, punched in the ribs and bashed eight times with the butt of a stun gun.
District Attorney Tony Rackauckas said the fight began when Ramos asked Thomas to place his hands on his knees.
When Thomas had trouble complying, Ramos snapped on a pair of latex gloves, held his fists in front of Thomas' face and said: "Now see my fists? They are getting ready to F you up," the prosecutor said.
He then went on to swing his baton at Thomas, chased him and eventually pinned him to the ground with his body, authorities said.
The coroner concluded the cause of death was mechanical compression of the thorax, which made it impossible for Thomas to breathe normally and deprived his brain of oxygen, Rackauckas said. Other injuries to the face and head contributed to his death.
Cicinelli, who arrived later, kneed Thomas twice in the head and used a Taser on him as he screamed and yelled in pain, Rackauckas said.
An FBI investigation is under way to determine if Thomas' civil rights were violated.

ATLANTA ? The National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP), the federally funded organization that facilitates most matched unrelated donor transplants in the United States, has released outcome data that indicate Northside Hospital?s Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMT) Program has, by far, the best survival rates for matched related and unrelated transplants of any program in the country. The most recently released outcome data was based on related transplants performed Jan. 1, 2008 to Dec. 31, 2008, and unrelated transplants performed Jan. 1, 2004 to Dec. 31, 2008, with 100-day follow-up post transplant. Rankings are among BMT programs that performed more than two transplants during the research period.
Transplanting healthy marrow may be the best and only hope of a cure for life-threatening diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma and other blood disorders. The BMT program at Northside is one of the largest and most comprehensive programs in the nation, serving patients who require bone marrow or stem cell transplants. Patients don?t need to travel far to have access to the full range of available hematopoietic transplants, including those from matched related, matched unrelated and haploidentical donors and cord blood transplants. All services are conveniently located at Northside?s Atlanta campus.
In 2010, 175 transplants were performed at Northside, placing the hospital among the top 10 percent of all BMT programs in the nation in terms of volume. The one-year survival of matched unrelated donor patients transplanted at Northside was 77 percent, the best of any BMT program in the country. Furthermore, the actual survival was 19 percent above the survival expected by the NMDP for Northside, based on the risk profile of the patients transplanted (56.3 percent). This is the greatest positive variance between expected and actual survival for any BMT program in the nation.

You know what qualified sales leads are, but if you asked your sales account managers and corporate executives, would they have the same definition of a qualified lead? Probably not.
If qualified lead generation in a business-to-business marketing-for-leads program is to succeed, marketing, sales and corporate management must share a unified definition of qualified sales leads. If you all agree from the start on what a qualified lead is, the marketing team stands a better chance of generating leads that will be valuable to its sales managers and associates.
It?s important to confirm the qualified-leads definition, in writing, with all parties. This definition is different for each company, so you must do some work to define the meaning of qualified sales leads at your company.
Step 1: Know the characteristics of a qualified sales lead
General questions that need to be answered in order to determine if a lead is qualified include the following:
Does the prospect have a need or an application for your product or service? What is the prospect?s role in the decision-making process? What is the prospect?s timing for purchase or implementation? What is the status of the prospect?s budget? What is the size of the opportunity?
However, additional or more detailed criteria may be needed to define qualified leads at some companies. This starts with a company contact, who admits to a business problem (either latently or directly) that could be solved by a product and/or service you are selling. Here are a couple of examples of problems/solutions to use in qualified lead generation.
Problem: The company?s current disparate computer systems require employees to perform redundant data entry, which wastes their time and reduces efficiency.
Solution: Your software product would enable single data entry.
Problem: The company?s managers suspect it is paying too much for unused software licenses, but they don?t know for sure.
Solution: Your license management software tracks all software on a network so companies can determine what software is licensed and being used or not
In addition to having a business problem that your company?s products or services can solve, truly qualified leads must meet four other conditions:
They must have an established project in play. They already have or believe they can find the money to buy a solution to the problem, or they are in the process of developing a budget. They plan to purchase within a reasonable amount of time. They have the power to get you in front of the appropriate final decision maker(s) when the time is right.
Step 2: Create a sales lead glossary
In addition to defining a qualified lead, consider creating a glossary of standard terms defining what your company considers to be a ?suspect,? a ?prospect,? an ?inquiry,? a ?response,? a ?qualified sales lead,? a ?qualified suspect,? a ?qualified prospect? and so forth.
Again, sales, marketing and management need to agree on the definition of each term, as this will help you avoid confusion later during qualified lead generation.
Step 3: Use a lead scoring approach
As you develop your lead qualification criteria, keep in mind that lead scoring can be an effective method of determining which leads are qualified and ready for sales follow up.
To score a lead, assign points based on how well the prospect meets each of your lead-qualification criteria. Consider the following example:
Funding, ready to go: 5 points Budget in formulation: 3 points No budget for project: 0 points Is the decision maker: 5 points Is the recommender: 3 points Is an influencer: 1 point Has a clear need for product: 5 points Plans to buy within six months: 5 points Plans to buy in one year or later: 1 point Plans to buy $50,000 of product: 5 points Plans to buy less than $100 of product: 0 points
To score the lead, add up all the points. Then, for example, those with 20 or more points are determined to be qualified sales leads; you should send them to your sales force.
Step 4: Drive sales opportunities with teamwork,
Meet with your peers in marketing, your company?s sales executives and your senior managers to learn about their definition of qualified sales leads. Use the lead-qualification criteria and scoring examples mentioned earlier in this article as discussion starters. Distill what you learn into a draft definition and run it by all the participants for further discussion and approval. If there is still disagreement, let your company?s senior sales management make the final decision.
With marketing, sales and management all speaking the same qualified sales leads language, your company can pull together to target and nurture the most promising leads. And boost sales and revenue as the result.

Start taking your responsibility as parent seriously even when you don?t live with your child. It?s important that father?s do not just dismiss their role in a child?s life even when he or she may be at a disadvantage due to location. However, in order for a child to successfully survive a divorce the commitment has to be as equally as great for both the biological mother and father to maintain relationships with their children even when from a distance. One parent cannot make a child love the other parent. We are all responsible for our own individual parental roles during marriage, co-parenting, step-parenting, etc. Just as a stepfather or stepmother has to work to create his or her relationship with that child; the relationship just doesn?t happen because one parent says so or they share the same the same residence.
Secondly, working together with the other parent is often the most important step. Cooperation between divorced parents is critical along with continuing visits. Custodial parents should recognize the importance of both mother and father relationships. Divorced parents should consider their child?s emotional status and welfare when faced with making choices about visitation. Step3Thirdly, important is ?phone-visit? scheduling. Arranging meetings in advance over the phone is essential especially when children become involved in after school activities. Even if a phone call is made at an inappropriate time such as during the custodial parents dinner, it is acceptable to agree to return the call within 30 minutes or another set time which may work better for the child.
Thirdly, seeking a relationship with your child by trying to buy their affections is never a good idea. Giving your child your time is essential for maintaining a good relationship. Pouring on your affections with money-bought items will only result in a superficial parent-child relationship. As a long-distance parent, giving of yourself is what is required of a good parent. Using a checkbook doesn?t fit the bill Step4Keep a running list of things you would like to address with your child during your conversations. Make notes of your talks and where you left off so you remember to check with your child the following week. This helps a parent appear interested in what?s important to him or her. This list of things to talk about will ultimately lead to an open relationship with your child and will also avoid any plain yes or no answers.
Even the type of stationary or cards that a parent sends is also important to a child. This way your son or daughter can identify a letter right away from the other parent almost like a trademark of your relationship. Making your mail stand out from the rest is the key to getting your child?s attention. Tangible items like letters and cards can be emotionally healthy and supportive. GENEVA ? A startling find at one of the world's foremost laboratories that a subatomic particle seemed to move faster than the speed of light has scientists around the world rethinking Albert Einstein and one of the foundations of physics.
Now they are planning to put the finding to further high-speed tests to see if a revolutionary shift in explaining the workings of the universe is needed ? or if the European scientists made a mistake.
Researchers at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research outside Geneva, who announced the discovery Thursday are still somewhat surprised themselves and planned to detail their findings on Friday.
If these results are confirmed, they won't change at all the way we live or the way the universe behaves. After all, these particles have presumably been speed demons for billions of years. But the finding will fundamentally change our understanding of how the world works, physicists said.
Only two labs elsewhere in the world can try to replicate the results. One is Fermilab outside Chicago and the other is a Japanese lab put on hold by the March tsunami and earthquake. Fermilab officials met Thursday about verifying the European study and said their particle beam is already up and running. The only trouble is that their measuring systems aren't nearly as precise as the Europeans' and won't be upgraded for a while, said Fermilab scientist Rob Plunkett.
"This thing is so important many of the normal scientific rivalries fall by the wayside," said Plunkett, a spokesman for the Fermilab team's experiments. "Everybody is going to be looking at every piece of information."
Plunkett said he is keeping an open mind on whether Einstein's theories need an update, but he added: "It's dangerous to lay odds against Einstein. Einstein has been tested repeatedly over and over again."
Going faster than light is something that is just not supposed to happen according to Einstein's 1905 special theory of relativity ? the one made famous by the equation E equals mc2. The speed of light ? 186,282 miles per second (299,792 kilometers per second) ? has long been considered a cosmic speed limit.
"We'd be thrilled if it's right because we love something that shakes the foundation of what we believe," said famed Columbia University physicist Brian Greene. "That's what we live for."
The claim is being greeted with skepticism inside and outside the European lab.
"The feeling that most people have is this can't be right, this can't be real," said James Gillies, a spokesman for CERN.
CERN provided the particle accelerator to send neutrinos on a breakneck 454-mile (730-kilometer) trip underground from Geneva to Italy. France's National Institute for Nuclear and Particle Physics Research collaborated with Italy's Ran Sass National Laboratory for the experiment, which has no connection to the atomic-smashing Large Hadron Collider, which is also located at CERN.
Gillies told The Associated Press that the readings have so astounded researchers that "they are inviting the broader physics community to look at what they've done and really scrutinize it in great detail."
That will be necessary, because Einstein's special relativity theory underlies "pretty much everything in modern physics," said John Ellis, a theoretical physicist at CERN who was not involved in the experiment. "It has worked perfectly up until now." And part of that theory is that nothing is faster than the speed of light.
CERN reported that a neutrino beam fired from a particle accelerator near Geneva to a lab in Italy traveled 60 nanoseconds faster than the speed of light. Scientists calculated the margin of error at just 10 nanoseconds, making the difference statistically significant.
Given the enormous implications of the find, they spent months checking and rechecking their results to make sure there were no flaws in the experiment.
A team at Fermilab had similar faster-than-light results in 2007. But that experiment had such a large margin of error that it undercut its scientific significance.
If anything is going to throw a cosmic twist into Einstein's theories, it's not surprising that it's the strange particles known as neutrinos. These are odd slivers of an atom that have confounded physicists for about 80 years.
The neutrino has almost no mass, it comes in three different "flavors," may have its own antiparticle and even has been seen shifting from one flavor to another while shooting out from the sun, said physicist Phillip Schewe, communications director at the Joint Quantum Institute in Maryland.
Fermilab team spokeswoman Jenny Thomas, a physics professor at the University College of London, said there must be a "more mundane explanation" for the European findings. She said Fermilab's experience showed how hard it is to measure accurately the distance, time and angles required for such a claim.
Nevertheless, the Fermilab team, which shoots neutrinos from Chicago to Minnesota, will go back to work immediately to try to verify or knock down the new findings, Thomas said.
Drew Baden, chairman of the physics department at the University of Maryland, said it is far more likely that there are measurement errors or some kind of fluke. Tracking neutrinos is very difficult, he said.
"This is ridiculous what they're putting out," Baden said. "Until this is verified by another group, it's flying carpets. It's cool, but..."
So if the neutrinos are pulling this fast one on Einstein, how can it happen?
Stephen Parke, head theoretician at the Fermilab, said there could be a cosmic shortcut through another dimension ? physics theory is full of unseen dimensions ? that allows the neutrinos to beat the speed of light.
Indiana University theoretical physicist Alan Kostelecky says there may be situations when the background is different in the universe, not perfectly symmetrical as Einstein says. Those changes in background may change both the speed of light and the speed of neutrinos.
But that doesn't mean Einstein's theory is ready for the trash heap, he said.
"I don't think you're going to ever kill Einstein's theory. You can't. It works," Kostelecky said, adding there are just times when an additional explanation is needed.
If the European findings are correct, "this would change the idea of how the universe is put together," Columbia's Greene said.
But he added: "I would bet just about everything I hold dear that this won't hold up to scrutiny."
