MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - Two New People's Army (NPA) rebels, who were reportedly doing extortion and recruitment activities, died in a clash with government troops in Albay yesterday, the military reported today.
Maj. Angelo Guzman, spokesman for the Army's 9th Infantry Division, said soldiers from the 2nd Infantry Division were deployed to the outskirts of Camalig town after receiving information from a resident about the rebel presence on Saturday morning.
"(The soldiers) responded to information from a local folk about the presence of 10 NPAs in their village doing some recruitment efforts, disinformation drives and extortion," said Guzman.
At around 5:30 a.m local time Saturday, Guzman said the squad-size soldiers (about nine men) caught up with the rebels. A gunfight ensued, leaving two NPA members dead.
Guzman said government soldiers, backed up by K9 tracking dogs, have been deployed to conduct pursuit operations against the fleeing rebels.
The 4,000-strong NPA, armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, is fighting a leftist insurgency in 60 Philippine provinces since 1969.
