Cycling in urban Africa is best avoided, but often a neccesity for one reason or another. On this occasion the only road option was that leading right through Benin?s capital, Cotonou. I?ve not seen a city so full of motor-bikes since I pedalled out of Ho Chi Min city in Vietnam. Most of the motor bikes there were like the ones here ? Chinese imports, either privately owned or used as motor-taxis for the city?s inhabitants. Only the rich can afford to buy cars in Africa.
I had no desire to stay in Cotonou, nor did I have any information or a detailed map of how to get out. The light was beginning to fade as I raced eastwards in the direction of Nigeria, which I would cross into a few days later. It was the worst time of day to be navigating my way out of a foreign city, although I briefly stopped on a bridge and turned round to take this photo. The blog post from which this photo appears can be found?here.
