New Ag Research Building Completion Slated for September
?
NASHVILLE (TSU News Service) ? All Tennessee State University on-going construction, maintenance and repair projects are on schedule and on budget, according to Ron Brooks, Associate Vice President for Facilities Management.
Prominent among the projects is the 25,000 square-foot cutting-edge agricultural biotechnology research building on the main TSU campus.
The $8 million research, teaching and office facility, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, will have the capability to conduct DNA synthesis and chromatography analysis, said Dr. Chandra Reddy, Dean of the College of Agriculture, Human and Natural Sciences.
The new building, scheduled to be completed in September, will also include working space for more than 20 new Ph.D.-level scientists, rooms for graduate students, large classrooms, and high-efficiency HVAC systems and laboratories.
Another project getting a major facelift is the Student Success Center in the H.M. Love complex. Funded through Title III, the Center is getting new furnishing in the auditorium, a new electronic messaging system, nine new classrooms, three computer labs, accommodations for collaborative learning, and a new vending system.
?This project is about 90 percent complete,? Brooks said.
Campus project managers have also disclosed that repairs and maintenance of the men?s basketball locker room has resulted in some major changes in the facility. The area is getting new lockers, flooring, individual showers, and graphics at a cost of more than $100,000, funded by Athletics.
In the College of Health Sciences, Title III funds are providing support for much-needed makeovers in the Humphries Nursing Labs. New enhancements include furnishings, sinks, smart boards and additional teaching equipment. The project costs about $80,000.
To ensure that the campus police are comfortably housed and their operations consolidated in one facility, the Queen Washington Building, the new home of the TSU Police Department, is also slated for a facelift. Pending permit from Metro construction officials, the facelift will include painting, new flooring, and space for the police monitoring system, which is still operated from the General Services Building ? on the other side of campus ? that previously housed the Police Department. The project should be completed by the end of April, Brooks said.
Additionally, Brooks disclosed that campus security is getting a major boost with the addition of new surveillance cameras.
?These projects reflect the continuing effort by TSU Administration to provide the best learning environment possible for our students and faculty,? Brooks said.
